She Reads Truth: Galatians

DAY 10 OF 15

CHILDREN AND FREE Paul uses the stories of Hagar (Genesis 16) and Sarah (Genesis 21) as an allegory to further demonstrate Law (slavery) vs. Faith (freedom). As you read it, the passage moves from historical, to allegorical, to personal. In the historical verses (v.22, 23), Paul reminds us that Abraham had two sons - one Ishmael and the other Isaac. One was a son of "nature" we might say, and one was a son of "promise" or super-nature. One was tied to human attempt to get a son (Hagar), and the other was a gift from God miraculously (Sara). These two sons and two women represent two religions, if you will (v.24-27). The religion of works (Judaism) and a religion of freedom (Christianity). In conclusion, Pauls turn to the Galatians and says, "You're essentially acting like your sons of Hagar, born of human effort, when in reality you're sons of promise born of Sara (v.28-31). Sister, how are you living? Like a slave to your efforts, earning a place in the family of God because of what you have done well/not done wrong? Or like a daughter of the King, an heir to all of the good things your Father has promised?
