Couples: Kindness ChallengeSample

Challenge 9
Ephesians 4:29 (NKJV): “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”
Kindness Illustrated
As Christians, we’re responsible for what comes out of our mouths. First, we’re instructed not to have corrupt words come out of our mouths. Second, our words should be edifying to build others up, which means we’re to be selective and choose our words carefully for each occasion and to instill grace with our speech.
Actions Steps
- Every day, tell your spouse two things you appreciate about them for that day—for something they did or said. Or, instead, you could log these two things down in an appreciation journal. Then, on a special day (e.g., New Year’s Eve, their birthday, their anniversary, etc.) give them the journal to read.
- Wait at least five seconds before responding to an emotional situation. If you feel you may need more time than that, come up with a plan with your spouse—it’s always best to “make plans for war in times of peace.” This will give you the time you need to plan for words that would edify instead of corrupt.
- When you have a choice between being right and being kind, always choose to be kind.
- Remember, the tone of your voice is at least 38% of any communication (words are only 7%). Make sure your tone is kind, edifying, and grateful so it doesn’t come across as attacking, righteous, demanding, or belittling.
