The Things We Do in the DarkSample

The Bible doesn’t just describe the problem of sin. It gives us the solution: to repent and let the Holy Spirit lead us into a new way of life—the life God created for us to enjoy.
To appreciate and enjoy that new life, we have to recognize the darkness of our old life and all the ways we still need God to transform us. Confessing our sin isn’t a “one and done” event–it’s an ongoing process. As God reveals more of himself to us, we realize how much we need to change and grow.
Confessing and repenting doesn’t come naturally to us. We don’t always want to work through our guilt and shame. As you read this psalm, use the words to express your own repentance to God. Take some time to dwell on your sin and the places you need God to forgive and heal. Listen to the assurances that God hears you, forgives you, and loves you. Personalize the words of Psalm 51 and pray it back to God.
Read: Psalm 51
Reflection Questions:
- What are some actions that the author asks God to perform in his life? Highlight these words (for example: wash me, purify me, create in me). Starting with these words, confess your sin to God and ask him to work in your life.
- What verses in Psalm 51 stood out to you as you were reading and praying? How do you think God might be speaking to you through this passage?

About this Plan

“Sin” is the language the Christian faith gives us to make sense of the brokenness and evil we find in the world and in ourselves. Sin blinds us to the truth about God and ourselves and keeps us from living up to the fullness of who God made us to be. This Bible Plan is part 3 of 8 designed to go along with Feed’s “Foundations” small group series.
