The Next King of Israel The books of 1 and 2 Kings were written as one book originally and provide a sequel to the books of First and Second Samuel. The author is unknown but his purpose was to continue explaining the ongoing covenant relationship of God with his chosen people throughout the history of the monarchy in Israel. The point of these books was not to offer a detailed account of everything that occurred but to point out the consistent work of God to honor and fulfill his promises to Israel. Solomon, David’s son with Bathsheba, assumes the throne after David, and his first actions will solidify his reputation as God’s chosen king. > 1\. 1 Kings 2:1–12 describes David’s final political “briefing” to his son, Solomon. The instructions he gives Solomon are difficult to comprehend today, but David is suggesting what will be necessary if Solomon is to firmly establish himself as king, and not have to fight to establish his position.
