 <div class="label">1</div><div class="p"> 1A prophecy: The word of the Lord to Israel through Malachi.#1:1 Malachi means my messenger.</div><div class="s1">Israel Doubts God&#8217;s Love</div><div class="p"> 2&#8220;I have loved you,&#8221; says the Lord.</div><div class="p">&#8220;But you ask, &#8216;How have you loved us?&#8217;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Was not Esau Jacob&#8217;s brother?&#8221; declares the Lord. &#8220;Yet I have loved Jacob, 3but Esau I have hated, and I have turned his hill country into a wasteland and left his inheritance to the desert jackals.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 4Edom may say, &#8220;Though we have been crushed, we will rebuild the ruins.&#8221;</div><div class="p">But this is what the Lord Almighty says: &#8220;They may build, but I will demolish. They will be called the Wicked Land, a people always under the wrath of the Lord. 5You will see it with your own eyes and say, &#8216;Great is the Lord&#8212;even beyond the borders of Israel!&#8217;</div><div class="s1">Breaking Covenant Through Blemished Sacrifices</div><div class="p"> 6&#8220;A son honors his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me?&#8221; says the Lord Almighty.</div><div class="p">&#8220;It is you priests who show contempt for my name.</div><div class="p">&#8220;But you ask, &#8216;How have we shown contempt for your name?&#8217;</div><div class="p"> 7&#8220;By offering defiled food on my altar.</div><div class="p">&#8220;But you ask, &#8216;How have we defiled you?&#8217;</div><div class="p">&#8220;By saying that the Lord&#8217;s table is contemptible. 8When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?&#8221; says the Lord Almighty.</div><div class="p"> 9&#8220;Now plead with God to be gracious to us. With such offerings from your hands, will he accept you?&#8221;&#8212;says the Lord Almighty.</div><div class="p"> 10&#8220;Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would not light useless fires on my altar! I am not pleased with you,&#8221; says the Lord Almighty, &#8220;and I will accept no offering from your hands. 11My name will be great among the nations, from where the sun rises to where it sets. In every place incense and pure offerings will be brought to me, because my name will be great among the nations,&#8221; says the Lord Almighty.</div><div class="p"> 12&#8220;But you profane it by saying, &#8216;The Lord&#8217;s table is defiled,&#8217; and, &#8216;Its food is contemptible.&#8217; 13And you say, &#8216;What a burden!&#8217; and you sniff at it contemptuously,&#8221; says the Lord Almighty.</div><div class="p">&#8220;When you bring injured, lame or diseased animals and offer them as sacrifices, should I accept them from your hands?&#8221; says the Lord. 14&#8220;Cursed is the cheat who has an acceptable male in his flock and vows to give it, but then sacrifices a blemished animal to the Lord. For I am a great king,&#8221; says the Lord Almighty, &#8220;and my name is to be feared among the nations.</div>

 <div class="label">2</div><div class="s1">Additional Warning to the Priests</div><div class="p"> 1&#8220;And now, you priests, this warning is for you. 2If you do not listen, and if you do not resolve to honor my name,&#8221; says the Lord Almighty, &#8220;I will send a curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not resolved to honor me.</div><div class="p"> 3&#8220;Because of you I will rebuke your descendants#2:3 Or will blight your grain; I will smear on your faces the dung from your festival sacrifices, and you will be carried off with it. 4And you will know that I have sent you this warning so that my covenant with Levi may continue,&#8221; says the Lord Almighty. 5&#8220;My covenant was with him, a covenant of life and peace, and I gave them to him; this called for reverence and he revered me and stood in awe of my name. 6True instruction was in his mouth and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many from sin.</div><div class="p"> 7&#8220;For the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, because he is the messenger of the Lord Almighty and people seek instruction from his mouth. 8But you have turned from the way and by your teaching have caused many to stumble; you have violated the covenant with Levi,&#8221; says the Lord Almighty. 9&#8220;So I have caused you to be despised and humiliated before all the people, because you have not followed my ways but have shown partiality in matters of the law.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Breaking Covenant Through Divorce</div><div class="p"> 10Do we not all have one Father#2:10 Or father? Did not one God create us? Why do we profane the covenant of our ancestors by being unfaithful to one another?</div><div class="p"> 11Judah has been unfaithful. A detestable thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the Lord loves by marrying women who worship a foreign god. 12As for the man who does this, whoever he may be, may the Lord remove him from the tents of Jacob#2:12 Or 12 May the Lord remove from the tents of Jacob anyone who gives testimony in behalf of the man who does this&#8212;even though he brings an offering to the Lord Almighty.</div><div class="p"> 13Another thing you do: You flood the Lord&#8217;s altar with tears. You weep and wail because he no longer looks with favor on your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands. 14You ask, &#8220;Why?&#8221; It is because the Lord is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.</div><div class="p"> 15Has not the one God made you? You belong to him in body and spirit. And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring.#2:15 The meaning of the Hebrew for the first part of this verse is uncertain. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth.</div><div class="p"> 16&#8220;The man who hates and divorces his wife,&#8221; says the Lord, the God of Israel, &#8220;does violence to the one he should protect,&#8221;#2:16 Or &#8220;I hate divorce,&#8221; says the Lord, the God of Israel, &#8220;because the man who divorces his wife covers his garment with violence,&#8221; says the Lord Almighty.</div><div class="p">So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful.</div><div class="s1">Breaking Covenant Through Injustice</div><div class="p"> 17You have wearied the Lord with your words.</div><div class="p">&#8220;How have we wearied him?&#8221; you ask.</div><div class="p">By saying, &#8220;All who do evil are good in the eyes of the Lord, and he is pleased with them&#8221; or &#8220;Where is the God of justice?&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">13</div><div class="s1">Nehemiah&#8217;s Final Reforms</div><div class="p"> 1On that day the Book of Moses was read aloud in the hearing of the people and there it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever be admitted into the assembly of God, 2because they had not met the Israelites with food and water but had hired Balaam to call a curse down on them. (Our God, however, turned the curse into a blessing.) 3When the people heard this law, they excluded from Israel all who were of foreign descent.</div><div class="p"> 4Before this, Eliashib the priest had been put in charge of the storerooms of the house of our God. He was closely associated with Tobiah, 5and he had provided him with a large room formerly used to store the grain offerings and incense and temple articles, and also the tithes of grain, new wine and olive oil prescribed for the Levites, musicians and gatekeepers, as well as the contributions for the priests.</div><div class="p"> 6But while all this was going on, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I had returned to the king. Some time later I asked his permission 7and came back to Jerusalem. Here I learned about the evil thing Eliashib had done in providing Tobiah a room in the courts of the house of God. 8I was greatly displeased and threw all Tobiah&#8217;s household goods out of the room. 9I gave orders to purify the rooms, and then I put back into them the equipment of the house of God, with the grain offerings and the incense.</div><div class="p"> 10I also learned that the portions assigned to the Levites had not been given to them, and that all the Levites and musicians responsible for the service had gone back to their own fields. 11So I rebuked the officials and asked them, &#8220;Why is the house of God neglected?&#8221; Then I called them together and stationed them at their posts.</div><div class="p"> 12All Judah brought the tithes of grain, new wine and olive oil into the storerooms. 13I put Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and a Levite named Pedaiah in charge of the storerooms and made Hanan son of Zakkur, the son of Mattaniah, their assistant, because they were considered trustworthy. They were made responsible for distributing the supplies to their fellow Levites.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p"> 14Remember me for this, my God, and do not blot out what I have so faithfully done for the house of my God and its services.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p"> 15In those days I saw people in Judah treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on donkeys, together with wine, grapes, figs and all other kinds of loads. And they were bringing all this into Jerusalem on the Sabbath. Therefore I warned them against selling food on that day. 16People from Tyre who lived in Jerusalem were bringing in fish and all kinds of merchandise and selling them in Jerusalem on the Sabbath to the people of Judah. 17I rebuked the nobles of Judah and said to them, &#8220;What is this wicked thing you are doing&#8212;desecrating the Sabbath day? 18Didn&#8217;t your ancestors do the same things, so that our God brought all this calamity on us and on this city? Now you are stirring up more wrath against Israel by desecrating the Sabbath.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 19When evening shadows fell on the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I ordered the doors to be shut and not opened until the Sabbath was over. I stationed some of my own men at the gates so that no load could be brought in on the Sabbath day. 20Once or twice the merchants and sellers of all kinds of goods spent the night outside Jerusalem. 21But I warned them and said, &#8220;Why do you spend the night by the wall? If you do this again, I will arrest you.&#8221; From that time on they no longer came on the Sabbath. 22Then I commanded the Levites to purify themselves and go and guard the gates in order to keep the Sabbath day holy.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p">Remember me for this also, my God, and show mercy to me according to your great love.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p"> 23Moreover, in those days I saw men of Judah who had married women from Ashdod, Ammon and Moab. 24Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod or the language of one of the other peoples, and did not know how to speak the language of Judah. 25I rebuked them and called curses down on them. I beat some of the men and pulled out their hair. I made them take an oath in God&#8217;s name and said: &#8220;You are not to give your daughters in marriage to their sons, nor are you to take their daughters in marriage for your sons or for yourselves. 26Was it not because of marriages like these that Solomon king of Israel sinned? Among the many nations there was no king like him. He was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel, but even he was led into sin by foreign women. 27Must we hear now that you too are doing all this terrible wickedness and are being unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 28One of the sons of Joiada son of Eliashib the high priest was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite. And I drove him away from me.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p"> 29Remember them, my God, because they defiled the priestly office and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p"> 30So I purified the priests and the Levites of everything foreign, and assigned them duties, each to his own task. 31I also made provision for contributions of wood at designated times, and for the firstfruits.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p">Remember me with favor, my God.</div>
