The Contempt of God God who is the High King enthroned in heaven, laughs, watching the conspiracy of the pagan kings against him. He is amused by their imperious arrogance. It is ridiculous that they would even consider the prospect of waging war against the One who created the cosmos by the word of his mouth! What absurdity it is that the created being can even for a second believe that he can overthrow God. Mankind would sooner pour all the oceans inside a bottle or gather all the stars into a bag than triumph over God. It is futile to resist God. It is suicidal! Yet the proud delusion of man is such that he believes he can defeat God and reign in his place. God who observes the best of the wisdom of the world, the weapons of war, and the craft of conspiracy, holds rebellious sinners in derision. He mocks the best-laid plans of sinners for the insanity it truly is! God exposes the autonomous wisdom of this world as foolishness! Julian, the nephew of Constantine the Great, grew up in the Christian faith. However, when he became Emperor of the Roman Empire in AD 361, he revealed himself to be the anti-Christ himself! Julian rejected Jesus and restored ancient pagan worship. He expelled Christians from his court, banned Christians from teaching in universities, confiscated church property, and published tracts vilifying Christians. During his reign, Christians were often assaulted in the streets by mobs. He would mockingly refer to Jesus as “that Galilean carpenter” and his followers as “Galileans” to highlight that they originated from a backward province in Palestine. Once the Emperor’s pagan friend, Libanius scornfully asked a Christian youth, what the Galilean carpenter’s son was doing. The Christian said, “He is building a coffin for Julian.” Soon after this, in a military campaign against the Persians, Julian was hit by a stray arrow. Clutching his wound on the battlefield, Julian raised his bloodied hand to the heavens and shouted, “Thou hast won, O Galilean!” Julian died that very evening having reigned for just a year and eight months. The Roman Emperor who dared defy God became the last pagan Emperor of Rome and is remembered even today with reprehension as Julian the apostate. The Julians of this world are held in contempt by God! God has the final laugh against all who dare defy his holy reign.
