Love God Greatly - Our Security for Eternity: The Gospel of John Sample

Read: John 13:31–14:31
SOAP: John 14:6
Jesus replied, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
The Gospel of John shows many aspects of Jesus’ public ministry. He is in many different places, interacting with many different people. When the Gospel transitions to Jesus’ private ministry, the events John describes took place in the span of a few hours in one location. As Jesus shared His final meal with His disciples, He revealed even more of who He is through two final claims.
Judas had gone out, but many of the disciples did not understand what he was about to do. As Jesus continued to reveal Himself the disciples did not understand what He said about where He was going. They were thinking in terms of a physical location, a place they did not know of. They longed to continue following Jesus. When they asked Him the way to where He was going Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.”
Jesus is the Way. He is the way to the Father—no one comes to the Father apart from Him. If we know Jesus, we know the Father, and without Jesus, we cannot know the Father. Jesus, once again, explained His connection to the Father, affirming His deity as the Son of God. He is the Way, the only way, to the Father.
Jesus is the Truth. He is the embodiment of the Word of God. He is the Word made flesh, come to dwell with us so that we might know the Father (see John 1). All of God’s attributes are made known in Him. When we obey His commandments, we do so because we believe He is Truth. Because Jesus was going back to the Father, He promised to send an Advocate, the Spirit of truth, to reside in His followers. The Spirit of truth lives in those who believe in Jesus and accept His testimony.
Jesus is the Life. Though the disciples did not yet understand, Jesus kept referring to His coming death. But Jesus would not stay dead: He lives! Because He lives, we too will live (John 14:19). He is the One who has power over death, power over the grave, and power to give us eternal life.
He is the Way, and the Truth, and the Life.
