 <div class="label">30</div><div class="s1">The Altar of Incense</div><div class="p"> 1&#8220;Make an altar of acacia wood for burning incense. 2It is to be square, a cubit long and a cubit wide, and two cubits high#30:2 That is, about 1 1/2 feet long and wide and 3 feet high or about 45 centimeters long and wide and 90 centimeters high&#8212;its horns of one piece with it. 3Overlay the top and all the sides and the horns with pure gold, and make a gold molding around it. 4Make two gold rings for the altar below the molding&#8212;two on each of the opposite sides&#8212;to hold the poles used to carry it. 5Make the poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold. 6Put the altar in front of the curtain that shields the ark of the covenant law&#8212;before the atonement cover that is over the tablets of the covenant law&#8212;where I will meet with you.</div><div class="p"> 7&#8220;Aaron must burn fragrant incense on the altar every morning when he tends the lamps. 8He must burn incense again when he lights the lamps at twilight so incense will burn regularly before the Lord for the generations to come. 9Do not offer on this altar any other incense or any burnt offering or grain offering, and do not pour a drink offering on it. 10Once a year Aaron shall make atonement on its horns. This annual atonement must be made with the blood of the atoning sin offering#30:10 Or purification offering for the generations to come. It is most holy to the Lord.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Atonement Money</div><div class="p"> 11Then the Lord said to Moses, 12&#8220;When you take a census of the Israelites to count them, each one must pay the Lord a ransom for his life at the time he is counted. Then no plague will come on them when you number them. 13Each one who crosses over to those already counted is to give a half shekel,#30:13 That is, about 1/5 ounce or about 5.8 grams; also in verse 15 according to the sanctuary shekel, which weighs twenty gerahs. This half shekel is an offering to the Lord. 14All who cross over, those twenty years old or more, are to give an offering to the Lord. 15The rich are not to give more than a half shekel and the poor are not to give less when you make the offering to the Lord to atone for your lives. 16Receive the atonement money from the Israelites and use it for the service of the tent of meeting. It will be a memorial for the Israelites before the Lord, making atonement for your lives.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Basin for Washing</div><div class="p"> 17Then the Lord said to Moses, 18&#8220;Make a bronze basin, with its bronze stand, for washing. Place it between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put water in it. 19Aaron and his sons are to wash their hands and feet with water from it. 20Whenever they enter the tent of meeting, they shall wash with water so that they will not die. Also, when they approach the altar to minister by presenting a food offering to the Lord, 21they shall wash their hands and feet so that they will not die. This is to be a lasting ordinance for Aaron and his descendants for the generations to come.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Anointing Oil</div><div class="p"> 22Then the Lord said to Moses, 23&#8220;Take the following fine spices: 500 shekels#30:23 That is, about 12 1/2 pounds or about 5.8 kilograms; also in verse 24 of liquid myrrh, half as much (that is, 250 shekels) of fragrant cinnamon, 250 shekels#30:23 That is, about 6 1/4 pounds or about 2.9 kilograms of fragrant calamus, 24500 shekels of cassia&#8212;all according to the sanctuary shekel&#8212;and a hin#30:24 That is, probably about 1 gallon or about 3.8 liters of olive oil. 25Make these into a sacred anointing oil, a fragrant blend, the work of a perfumer. It will be the sacred anointing oil. 26Then use it to anoint the tent of meeting, the ark of the covenant law, 27the table and all its articles, the lampstand and its accessories, the altar of incense, 28the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the basin with its stand. 29You shall consecrate them so they will be most holy, and whatever touches them will be holy.</div><div class="p"> 30&#8220;Anoint Aaron and his sons and consecrate them so they may serve me as priests. 31Say to the Israelites, &#8216;This is to be my sacred anointing oil for the generations to come. 32Do not pour it on anyone else&#8217;s body and do not make any other oil using the same formula. It is sacred, and you are to consider it sacred. 33Whoever makes perfume like it and puts it on anyone other than a priest must be cut off from their people.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Incense</div><div class="p"> 34Then the Lord said to Moses, &#8220;Take fragrant spices&#8212;gum resin, onycha and galbanum&#8212;and pure frankincense, all in equal amounts, 35and make a fragrant blend of incense, the work of a perfumer. It is to be salted and pure and sacred. 36Grind some of it to powder and place it in front of the ark of the covenant law in the tent of meeting, where I will meet with you. It shall be most holy to you. 37Do not make any incense with this formula for yourselves; consider it holy to the Lord. 38Whoever makes incense like it to enjoy its fragrance must be cut off from their people.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">2</div><div class="s1">Elijah Taken Up to Heaven</div><div class="p"> 1When the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. 2Elijah said to Elisha, &#8220;Stay here; the Lord has sent me to Bethel.&#8221;</div><div class="p">But Elisha said, &#8220;As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.&#8221; So they went down to Bethel.</div><div class="p"> 3The company of the prophets at Bethel came out to Elisha and asked, &#8220;Do you know that the Lord is going to take your master from you today?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Yes, I know,&#8221; Elisha replied, &#8220;so be quiet.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 4Then Elijah said to him, &#8220;Stay here, Elisha; the Lord has sent me to Jericho.&#8221;</div><div class="p">And he replied, &#8220;As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.&#8221; So they went to Jericho.</div><div class="p"> 5The company of the prophets at Jericho went up to Elisha and asked him, &#8220;Do you know that the Lord is going to take your master from you today?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Yes, I know,&#8221; he replied, &#8220;so be quiet.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6Then Elijah said to him, &#8220;Stay here; the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.&#8221;</div><div class="p">And he replied, &#8220;As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.&#8221; So the two of them walked on.</div><div class="p"> 7Fifty men from the company of the prophets went and stood at a distance, facing the place where Elijah and Elisha had stopped at the Jordan. 8Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up and struck the water with it. The water divided to the right and to the left, and the two of them crossed over on dry ground.</div><div class="p"> 9When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, &#8220;Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,&#8221; Elisha replied.</div><div class="p"> 10&#8220;You have asked a difficult thing,&#8221; Elijah said, &#8220;yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours&#8212;otherwise, it will not.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 11As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. 12Elisha saw this and cried out, &#8220;My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel!&#8221; And Elisha saw him no more. Then he took hold of his garment and tore it in two.</div><div class="p"> 13Elisha then picked up Elijah&#8217;s cloak that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. 14He took the cloak that had fallen from Elijah and struck the water with it. &#8220;Where now is the Lord, the God of Elijah?&#8221; he asked. When he struck the water, it divided to the right and to the left, and he crossed over.</div><div class="p"> 15The company of the prophets from Jericho, who were watching, said, &#8220;The spirit of Elijah is resting on Elisha.&#8221; And they went to meet him and bowed to the ground before him. 16&#8220;Look,&#8221; they said, &#8220;we your servants have fifty able men. Let them go and look for your master. Perhaps the Spirit of the Lord has picked him up and set him down on some mountain or in some valley.&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;No,&#8221; Elisha replied, &#8220;do not send them.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 17But they persisted until he was too embarrassed to refuse. So he said, &#8220;Send them.&#8221; And they sent fifty men, who searched for three days but did not find him. 18When they returned to Elisha, who was staying in Jericho, he said to them, &#8220;Didn&#8217;t I tell you not to go?&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Healing of the Water</div><div class="p"> 19The people of the city said to Elisha, &#8220;Look, our lord, this town is well situated, as you can see, but the water is bad and the land is unproductive.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20&#8220;Bring me a new bowl,&#8221; he said, &#8220;and put salt in it.&#8221; So they brought it to him.</div><div class="p"> 21Then he went out to the spring and threw the salt into it, saying, &#8220;This is what the Lord says: &#8216;I have healed this water. Never again will it cause death or make the land unproductive.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221; 22And the water has remained pure to this day, according to the word Elisha had spoken.</div><div class="s1">Elisha Is Jeered</div><div class="p"> 23From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some boys came out of the town and jeered at him. &#8220;Get out of here, baldy!&#8221; they said. &#8220;Get out of here, baldy!&#8221; 24He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the Lord. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys. 25And he went on to Mount Carmel and from there returned to Samaria.</div>

He cried out, saying, &#8220;This is the one I spoke about when I said, &#8216;He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;) 16Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and#1:18 Some manuscripts but the only Son, who is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.</div><div class="s1">John the Baptist Denies Being the Messiah</div><div class="p"> 19Now this was John&#8217;s testimony when the Jewish leaders#1:19 The Greek term traditionally translated the Jews (hoi Ioudaioi) refers here and elsewhere in John&#8217;s Gospel to those Jewish leaders who opposed Jesus; also in 5:10, 15,16; 7:1,11,13; 9:22; 18:14,28,36; 19:7,12,31,38; 20:19. in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, &#8220;I am not the Messiah.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 21They asked him, &#8220;Then who are you? Are you Elijah?&#8221;</div><div class="p">He said, &#8220;I am not.&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Are you the Prophet?&#8221;</div><div class="p">He answered, &#8220;No.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 22Finally they said, &#8220;Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 23John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, &#8220;I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, &#8216;Make straight the way for the Lord.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;#1:23 Isaiah 40:3</div><div class="p"> 24Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25questioned him, &#8220;Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 26&#8220;I baptize with#1:26 Or in; also in verses 31 and 33 (twice) water,&#8221; John replied, &#8220;but among you stands one you do not know. 27He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 28This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.</div><div class="s1">John Testifies About Jesus</div><div class="p"> 29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, &#8220;Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30This is the one I meant when I said, &#8216;A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.&#8217; 31I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 32Then John gave this testimony: &#8220;I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, &#8216;The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.&#8217; 34I have seen and I testify that this is God&#8217;s Chosen One.&#8221;#1:34 See Isaiah 42:1; many manuscripts is the Son of God.</div><div class="s1">John&#8217;s Disciples Follow Jesus</div><div class="p"> 35The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, &#8220;Look, the Lamb of God!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 37When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, &#8220;What do you want?&#8221;</div><div class="p">They said, &#8220;Rabbi&#8221; (which means &#8220;Teacher&#8221;), &#8220;where are you staying?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 39 &#8220;Come,&#8221; he replied, &#8220;and you will see.&#8221;</div><div class="p">So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.</div><div class="p"> 40Andrew, Simon Peter&#8217;s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, &#8220;We have found the Messiah&#8221; (that is, the Christ). 42And he brought him to Jesus.</div><div class="p">Jesus looked at him and said, &#8220;You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas&#8221; (which, when translated, is Peter#1:42 Cephas (Aramaic) and Peter (Greek) both mean rock.).</div><div class="s1">Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael</div><div class="p"> 43The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, &#8220;Follow me.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 44Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. 45Philip found Nathanael and told him, &#8220;We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote&#8212;Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 46&#8220;Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?&#8221; Nathanael asked.</div><div class="p">&#8220;Come and see,&#8221; said Philip.</div><div class="p"> 47When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, &#8220;Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 48&#8220;How do you know me?&#8221; Nathanael asked.</div><div class="p">Jesus answered, &#8220;I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 49Then Nathanael declared, &#8220;Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 50Jesus said, &#8220;You believe#1:50 Or Do you believe&#8230;? because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.&#8221; 51He then added, &#8220;Very truly I tell you,#1:51 The Greek is plural. you#1:51 The Greek is plural. will see &#8216;heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on&#8217;#1:51 Gen. 28:12 the Son of Man.&#8221;</div>
