 <div class="label">9</div><div class="s1">A Common Destiny for All</div><div class="p"> 1So I reflected on all this and concluded that the righteous and the wise and what they do are in God&#8217;s hands, but no one knows whether love or hate awaits them. 2All share a common destiny&#8212;the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad,#9:2 Septuagint (Aquila), Vulgate and Syriac; Hebrew does not have and the bad. the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not.</div><div class="q1">As it is with the good,</div><div class="q2">so with the sinful;</div><div class="q1">as it is with those who take oaths,</div><div class="q2">so with those who are afraid to take them.</div><div class="p"> 3This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: The same destiny overtakes all. The hearts of people, moreover, are full of evil and there is madness in their hearts while they live, and afterward they join the dead. 4Anyone who is among the living has hope#9:4 Or What then is to be chosen? With all who live, there is hope&#8212;even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!</div><div class="q1"> 5For the living know that they will die,</div><div class="q2">but the dead know nothing;</div><div class="q1">they have no further reward,</div><div class="q2">and even their name is forgotten.</div><div class="q1"> 6Their love, their hate</div><div class="q2">and their jealousy have long since vanished;</div><div class="q1">never again will they have a part</div><div class="q2">in anything that happens under the sun.</div><div class="p"> 7Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do. 8Always be clothed in white, and always anoint your head with oil. 9Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun&#8212;all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. 10Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.</div><div class="p"> 11I have seen something else under the sun:</div><div class="q1">The race is not to the swift</div><div class="q2">or the battle to the strong,</div><div class="q1">nor does food come to the wise</div><div class="q2">or wealth to the brilliant</div><div class="q2">or favor to the learned;</div><div class="q1">but time and chance happen to them all.</div><div class="p"> 12Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come:</div><div class="q1">As fish are caught in a cruel net,</div><div class="q2">or birds are taken in a snare,</div><div class="q1">so people are trapped by evil times</div><div class="q2">that fall unexpectedly upon them.</div><div class="s1">Wisdom Better Than Folly</div><div class="p"> 13I also saw under the sun this example of wisdom that greatly impressed me: 14There was once a small city with only a few people in it. And a powerful king came against it, surrounded it and built huge siege works against it. 15Now there lived in that city a man poor but wise, and he saved the city by his wisdom. But nobody remembered that poor man. 16So I said, &#8220;Wisdom is better than strength.&#8221; But the poor man&#8217;s wisdom is despised, and his words are no longer heeded.</div><div class="q1"> 17The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded</div><div class="q2">than the shouts of a ruler of fools.</div><div class="q1"> 18Wisdom is better than weapons of war,</div><div class="q2">but one sinner destroys much good.</div><div class="b"></div>

 <div class="label">9</div><div class="s1">Daniel&#8217;s Prayer</div><div class="p"> 1In the first year of Darius son of Xerxes#9:1 Hebrew Ahasuerus (a Mede by descent), who was made ruler over the Babylonian#9:1 Or Chaldean kingdom&#8212; 2in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the Lord given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years. 3So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes.</div><div class="p"> 4I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed:</div><div class="pm">&#8220;Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, 5we have sinned and done wrong. We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away from your commands and laws. 6We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes and our ancestors, and to all the people of the land.</div><div class="pm"> 7&#8220;Lord, you are righteous, but this day we are covered with shame&#8212;the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, both near and far, in all the countries where you have scattered us because of our unfaithfulness to you. 8We and our kings, our princes and our ancestors are covered with shame, Lord, because we have sinned against you. 9The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him; 10we have not obeyed the Lord our God or kept the laws he gave us through his servants the prophets. 11All Israel has transgressed your law and turned away, refusing to obey you.</div><div class="pm">&#8220;Therefore the curses and sworn judgments written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against you. 12You have fulfilled the words spoken against us and against our rulers by bringing on us great disaster. Under the whole heaven nothing has ever been done like what has been done to Jerusalem. 13Just as it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come on us, yet we have not sought the favor of the Lord our God by turning from our sins and giving attention to your truth. 14The Lord did not hesitate to bring the disaster on us, for the Lord our God is righteous in everything he does; yet we have not obeyed him.</div><div class="pm"> 15&#8220;Now, Lord our God, who brought your people out of Egypt with a mighty hand and who made for yourself a name that endures to this day, we have sinned, we have done wrong. 16Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts, turn away your anger and your wrath from Jerusalem, your city, your holy hill. Our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors have made Jerusalem and your people an object of scorn to all those around us.</div><div class="pm"> 17&#8220;Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servant. For your sake, Lord, look with favor on your desolate sanctuary. 18Give ear, our God, and hear; open your eyes and see the desolation of the city that bears your Name. We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy. 19Lord, listen! Lord, forgive! Lord, hear and act! For your sake, my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Seventy &#8220;Sevens&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel and making my request to the Lord my God for his holy hill&#8212; 21while I was still in prayer, Gabriel, the man I had seen in the earlier vision, came to me in swift flight about the time of the evening sacrifice. 22He instructed me and said to me, &#8220;Daniel, I have now come to give you insight and understanding. 23As soon as you began to pray, a word went out, which I have come to tell you, for you are highly esteemed. Therefore, consider the word and understand the vision:</div><div class="p"> 24&#8220;Seventy &#8216;sevens&#8217;#9:24 Or &#8216;weeks&#8217;; also in verses 25 and 26 are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish#9:24 Or restrain transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place.#9:24 Or the most holy One</div><div class="p"> 25&#8220;Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One,#9:25 Or an anointed one; also in verse 26 the ruler, comes, there will be seven &#8216;sevens,&#8217; and sixty-two &#8216;sevens.&#8217; It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble. 26After the sixty-two &#8216;sevens,&#8217; the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing.#9:26 Or death and will have no one; or death, but not for himself The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. 27He will confirm a covenant with many for one &#8216;seven.&#8217;#9:27 Or &#8216;week&#8217; In the middle of the &#8216;seven&#8217;#9:27 Or &#8216;week&#8217; he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple#9:27 Septuagint and Theodotion; Hebrew wing he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.#9:27 Or it&#8221;#9:27 Or And one who causes desolation will come upon the wing of the abominable temple, until the end that is decreed is poured out on the desolated city</div>

 <div class="label">10</div><div class="s1">Daniel&#8217;s Vision of a Man</div><div class="p"> 1In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, a revelation was given to Daniel (who was called Belteshazzar). Its message was true and it concerned a great war.#10:1 Or true and burdensome The understanding of the message came to him in a vision.</div><div class="p"> 2At that time I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks. 3I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over.</div><div class="p"> 4On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing on the bank of the great river, the Tigris, 5I looked up and there before me was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist. 6His body was like topaz, his face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude.</div><div class="p"> 7I, Daniel, was the only one who saw the vision; those who were with me did not see it, but such terror overwhelmed them that they fled and hid themselves. 8So I was left alone, gazing at this great vision; I had no strength left, my face turned deathly pale and I was helpless. 9Then I heard him speaking, and as I listened to him, I fell into a deep sleep, my face to the ground.</div><div class="p"> 10A hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees. 11He said, &#8220;Daniel, you who are highly esteemed, consider carefully the words I am about to speak to you, and stand up, for I have now been sent to you.&#8221; And when he said this to me, I stood up trembling.</div><div class="p"> 12Then he continued, &#8220;Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. 13But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia. 14Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people in the future, for the vision concerns a time yet to come.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 15While he was saying this to me, I bowed with my face toward the ground and was speechless. 16Then one who looked like a man#10:16 Most manuscripts of the Masoretic Text; one manuscript of the Masoretic Text, Dead Sea Scrolls and Septuagint Then something that looked like a human hand touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and began to speak. I said to the one standing before me, &#8220;I am overcome with anguish because of the vision, my lord, and I feel very weak. 17How can I, your servant, talk with you, my lord? My strength is gone and I can hardly breathe.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 18Again the one who looked like a man touched me and gave me strength. 19&#8220;Do not be afraid, you who are highly esteemed,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Peace! Be strong now; be strong.&#8221;</div><div class="p">When he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, &#8220;Speak, my lord, since you have given me strength.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20So he said, &#8220;Do you know why I have come to you? Soon I will return to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I go, the prince of Greece will come; 21but first I will tell you what is written in the Book of Truth. (No one supports me against them except Michael, your prince.</div>

 <div class="label">5</div><div class="s1">The Scroll and the Lamb</div><div class="p"> 1Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. 2And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, &#8220;Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?&#8221; 3But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. 4I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. 5Then one of the elders said to me, &#8220;Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits#5:6 That is, the sevenfold Spirit of God sent out into all the earth. 7He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. 8And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God&#8217;s people. 9And they sang a new song, saying:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;You are worthy to take the scroll</div><div class="q2">and to open its seals,</div><div class="q1">because you were slain,</div><div class="q2">and with your blood you purchased for God</div><div class="q2">persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.</div><div class="q1"> 10You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,</div><div class="q2">and they will reign#5:10 Some manuscripts they reign on the earth.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 11Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12In a loud voice they were saying:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,</div><div class="q2">to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength</div><div class="q2">and honor and glory and praise!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb</div><div class="q2">be praise and honor and glory and power,</div><div class="qc">for ever and ever!&#8221;</div><div class="m"> 14The four living creatures said, &#8220;Amen,&#8221; and the elders fell down and worshiped.</div>
