         <div class="label">4</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Peter and John Before the Sanhedrin</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="ACT.4.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="ACT.4.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="ACT.4.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="ACT.4.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew to about five thousand.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="ACT.4.4"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="ACT.4.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">The next day the rulers, the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="ACT.4.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and others of the high priest&#8217;s family. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="ACT.4.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: &#8220;By what power or what name did you do this?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="ACT.4.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="ACT.4.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: &#8220;Rulers and elders of the people! </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="ACT.4.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="ACT.4.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ACT.4.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">Jesus is</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ACT.4.11"><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;the stone you builders rejected,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ACT.4.11"><span class="content">which has become the cornerstone.&#8217;</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">4:11 </span><span class="ft">Psalm 118:22</span></span></span></span></div><div class="m"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ACT.4.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ACT.4.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ACT.4.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="ACT.4.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="ACT.4.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="ACT.4.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ACT.4.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">&#8220;What are we going to do with these men?&#8221; they asked. &#8220;Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign, and we cannot deny it. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ACT.4.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ACT.4.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="ACT.4.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="ACT.4.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">But Peter and John replied, &#8220;Which is right in God&#8217;s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.4.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.4.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="ACT.4.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">After further threats they let them go. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. </span></span><span class="verse v33" data-usfm="ACT.4.33"><span class="label">33</span><span class="content">With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God&#8217;s grace was so powerfully at work in them all </span></span><span class="verse v34" data-usfm="ACT.4.34"><span class="label">34</span><span class="content">that there were no needy persons among them. At the end of the hundred and fifty days the water had gone down, </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="GEN.8.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">and on the seventeenth day of the seventh month the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="GEN.8.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">The waters continued to recede until the tenth month, and on the first day of the tenth month the tops of the mountains became visible.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="GEN.8.5"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="GEN.8.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">After forty days Noah opened a window he had made in the ark </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="GEN.8.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">and sent out a raven, and it kept flying back and forth until the water had dried up from the earth. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="GEN.8.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Then he sent out a dove to see if the water had receded from the surface of the ground. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="GEN.8.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">But the dove could find nowhere to perch because there was water over all the surface of the earth; so it returned to Noah in the ark. He reached out his hand and took the dove and brought it back to himself in the ark. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="GEN.8.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">He waited seven more days and again sent out the dove from the ark. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="GEN.8.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">When the dove returned to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf! Then Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="GEN.8.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">He waited seven more days and sent the dove out again, but this time it did not return to him.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="GEN.8.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="GEN.8.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">By the first day of the first month of Noah&#8217;s six hundred and first year, the water had dried up from the earth. Noah then removed the covering from the ark and saw that the surface of the ground was dry. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="GEN.8.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">By the twenty-seventh day of the second month the earth was completely dry.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="GEN.8.14"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="GEN.8.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">Then God said to Noah, </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="GEN.8.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">&#8220;Come out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and their wives. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="GEN.8.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">Bring out every kind of living creature that is with you&#8212;the birds, the animals, and all the creatures that move along the ground&#8212;so they can multiply on the earth and be fruitful and increase in number on it.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="GEN.8.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="GEN.8.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">So Noah came out, together with his sons and his wife and his sons&#8217; wives. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="GEN.8.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">All the animals and all the creatures that move along the ground and all the birds&#8212;everything that moves on land&#8212;came out of the ark, one kind after another.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="GEN.8.19"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="GEN.8.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">Then Noah built an altar to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="GEN.8.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: &#8220;Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">8:21 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">humans, for</span></span></span><span class="content"> every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="REV.4.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="REV.4.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. In front of the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">4:5 </span><span class="ft">That is, the sevenfold Spirit</span></span></span><span class="content"> of God. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="REV.4.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="REV.4.6"><span class="content">In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="REV.4.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="REV.4.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying:</span></span></div><div class="b"></div><div class="qc"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="REV.4.8"><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Holy, holy, holy</span></span></div><div class="qc"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="REV.4.8"><span class="content">is the Lord God Almighty,&#8217;</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">4:8 </span><span class="ft">Isaiah 6:3</span></span></span></span></div><div class="qc"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="REV.4.8"><span class="content">who was, and is, and is to come.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="b"></div><div class="m"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="REV.4.8"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="REV.4.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="REV.4.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="REV.4.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="REV.4.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">&#8220;You are worthy, our Lord and God,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="REV.4.11"><span class="content">to receive glory and honor and power,</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="REV.4.11"><span class="content">for you created all things,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="REV.4.11"><span class="content">and by your will they were created</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="REV.4.11"><span class="content">and have their being.&#8221;</span></span></div>
