[IMAGE CONTENT] # Eternal Legacy When I was a teenager, I attended roughly 10 funerals in a short span of time for relatives that had passed away. Each one always caused me to be more reflective as I was reminded of the shortness and fragility of life. Funerals still have that effect on me. Death causes us to think about how we are living our lives and reminds us of what really matters. At times, our days at home or work can seem long. However, the apostle James says our life is but a vapour; almost nothing in comparison to eternity (James 4:14). If life is a vapour, eternity is perhaps like the ocean. The problem is that we spend most of our time trying to enjoy the vapour, rather than getting ready to swim in that ocean. Our time on earth determines our time in eternity, not only in regards to where we go. It also affects the treasure that awaits us on heaven’s shores (Matthew 6:19-20). This is why the apostle Paul tells us to set our mind on the eternal things above, not on the things that are on earth (Colossians 3:2). He reminds us to focus on what has an eternal value (2 Corinthians 4:17-18). It’s true that God wants us to have enjoyment here on earth. However, far too much time can be given to things that don’t really matter when measured against the ocean of eternity. I’ve seen people consumed by the vapour of Netflix series, social media updates, hobbies, and overindulging. It’s encouraging to remember that living out God’s eternal purpose in our lives will give you far deeper satisfaction than temporary pleasure. C.S. Lewis writes, “If you read history you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were precisely those who thought most of the next. It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this.” As we finish this plan, let’s be a people that keep eternity in mind. Your life was crafted by the hand of God with purpose and He has prepared good works for you to accomplish (Ephesians 2:10). What are you going to do this year that will have eternal significance? Will you be present with your family and show them God’s ways? Will you contribute to the building of the local church, using your gifts and finances to establish God’s Kingdom? Will you pray for our world to repent and know Jesus? Will you make the most of the opportunities that God gives you to share Christ’s living water with those who are dry and thirsty? Don’t waste your life. What we do here and now ripples on into the waves of eternity for our life and the lives of others. Let’s sail together toward an eternal horizon. Pray With Me Dear God, I love You and I thank You that You are always with me. I pray that You would help me to put aside distractions and hindrances so that I may live out the great purpose You have created for me. I want to live a life that leaves an eternal legacy. I commit myself to fixing my eyes on You and eternity from this day forward. Thank You for the new horizons Your love has given me. Amen.
