Draw Near – 365 Guides to Greater Intimacy with GodSample
NEAR THE EDGE
A young mother was awakened in the middle of the night by a loud thump. Knowing her five-year-old must have fallen out of bed, she rushed in to see if he was hurt. "Are you all right?" she asked anxiously. "Yes," he replied sleepily. "I just went to sleep too near to where I got in." Today, we read about a man who did not go to sleep too close to where he got in.
Tragically, some never know the nature of God because they go to sleep too near where they got in the door of salvation. Not so with David. He had been young and now was old. He wrote in one of his psalms that he had not seen the righteous forsaken or God's seed begging bread. David had grown in God from a lowly shepherd to a lofty king. Therefore, the words of Nathan the prophet came as no surprise. David knew deep love and affection from his heavenly Father.
Christianity is progressive, and unless we continue to grow in grace like David, we cannot understand the tremendous loving nature of God. Some misunderstand our Lord's leadings because they are too near the edge. But, those who continue to be led by His Spirit begin to understand the song of the psalmist: He is good; for his mercy endures forever. Therefore, we would be wise to take the advice of the prophet who admonished: Let us acknowledge the LORD; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth (Hosea 6:3).
