RULES OF THE GAME A friend of mine invents games as a hobby. He has created several exciting games that are now being marketed and widely accepted. In discussing his hobby, he says no game is possible unless there are rules. Rules make movement meaningful and give sense to structure. What is true of games is certainly true of society in general. No race of people can exist in a lawless society. Thus, God gave laws to Israel in the book of Leviticus. Leviticus gets its name from the tribe of Levi, from which God chose priests, singers, and those who assisted in worship. In this interesting book, Moses sets down many laws for the Israelites. Some of these were designed especially for their wilderness wanderings, whereas others were included which would last as long as their nation endured. The people were instructed to teach their children these rules so they might be safe and have God's blessings. Tragically, most of them ignored these ethics and suffered severely for their disregard. Although we are not under bondage to the old laws set down in Leviticus, there are laws of love that we must keep in Christ's Kingdom. Leviticus serves to show that God is high and holy and that he demands the best from us. Paul says that although we are free in Christ, we are not free to become involved in the bondage of the flesh. In Hebrews, we see the old system of Leviticus fused into the New Testament. Praise God for His Law! Society survives only because of it.
