THE UNDIVORCED A famed psychiatrist lamented, "Seventy-five percent of all marriages in our land are unhappy." Another marriage counselor suggested that while one out of every three marriages ends in divorce, another third might be accurately described as a state of being "undivorced." The undivorced live together for convenience, but any warmth or happiness in the relationship is gone. Many are disillusioned with marriage. They have such high hopes for happiness, but they never seem to achieve it. One survey indicated that 87 percent of college women said they expected their greatest satisfaction in life to come from their family relationships. Sixty percent of the men registered a similar expectation. Yet something often happens to circumvent this expectation; consequently, many are disillusioned, depressed, and disenchanted. Jesus told Peter: Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat (Luke 22:31). We must recognize that there are some very real enemies to any marriage and make a determined effort to conquer them. To do any less forfeits the battle and we lose in tears and heartbreak.
