Daily Guideposts 2016: 14-Day Plan

DAY 1 OF 14

For the past four years, I’ve been getting treatment for my depression at a clinic. The clinic has many advantages: it’s close to home, it has a great staff and facilities, and we can afford it. But it has a downside too. Since it’s a training clinic, doctors rotate in and out every two years. I’ve developed a very good relationship with my therapist for the last two years. I’ve been able to go with him into the most painful and problematic parts of my life. I trust him. It’s hard to establish that kind of trust, and I was worried about having to start the whole process again. Trusting people enough to share my heart with them isn’t easy for me. I’m afraid that if I let them see through the public me, the private me will repel them. It’s not a rational response; it’s an automatic emotional reaction that’s very hard for me to work through. Unfortunately, my difficulties with trust aren’t confined to other people; they get in the way of my relationship with God. Over and over again, Scripture urges us to trust the Lord. There’s no false front I can put up to fool God; whether I like it or not, He can see right through me. And that’s pretty scary. For me, the above verses from Galatians help me to see past the fear. When I came to Christ, I put on Christ. And when the Father looks at me, it’s not my sins and inadequacies He sees; it’s His Son, Who has taken them up and clothed them with Himself. That’s where I should be looking too. Lord Jesus Christ, teach me how to trust in You. —Andrew Attaway Digging Deeper: Psalm 33:21, Proverbs 3:5, 1 Timothy 1:14
