DAY 5 OF 35

Yesterday, we reflected on the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday based on John 12:12-13. In the parallel passage from Matthew 21, we are given some background information on this event. It is no coincidence that Jesus is riding the foal of a donkey. This was already prophesied by the Prophet Zechariah (Zechariah 9:9). This reveals that God has a plan, that He leaves nothing to chance. But why exactly a foal of a donkey? It could have also been a white horse, or even more spectacularly, a heroic lion. In the Old Covenant, the first-born animals had to be brought to the temple to honor God. The first always belongs to God, that is the principle. However, there was one exception: the donkey. It was probably simply too important for the Israelites as a farm animal. It had to be redeemed. With what? With a lamb. "Redeem with a lamb every firstborn donkey.” (Exodus 13:13 NIV) Do you understand what is happening here? Jesus is manifesting Himself as the Lamb of God! In the same way He redeemed the donkey, He wants to redeem you from your captivity! In Matthew 21:5, this lamb is described as gentle. He does not condemn you for your failure but wants to redeem you by His grace! ## ACTION STEP: Today, specifically name an area where you have failed over and over again. An addiction, an unhealthy feeling, something you simply have not been able to overcome despite many attempts. Invite the Lamb of God to come and trust Him anew that He can also overcome this area. ##### Joel Suter, ICF Luzern
