Reflections On The Gospel Of John

DAY 16 OF 21

SINCE YOU'RE IN SCHOOL, YOU MAY AS WELL LEARN THE LESSON All over the United States and around the world, students sit in classrooms listening to teachers, professors, and instructors for up to seven hours a day, five times a week for the purpose of receiving an education. Many of these students sit listening intently while taking notes for review at a later time to ensure they comprehend the material being taught. However, others only come because attending school is a requirement; that is until they reach a certain age. These individuals often show up unprepared with no pencil, pen, paper, textbooks, or any other material that will aid them in their learning experience. Therefore, when the time comes to demonstrate a grasp of the information previously taught by way of a test, many often fail miserably because they did not study and apply the presented material. Of course we all know what happens in school when an individual fails a number of tests in a particular subject, they usually must repeat the class and then receive the same instruction all over again until it is passed before they are allowed to move on. Unfortunately, this is also where many of us as believers often find ourselves as we navigate through the school and course of life. God has given us instructions in His Word and through the Holy Spirit as our Teacher and Guide (JHN.16.13). Sadly, we often fail the tests simply because we do not take time to study or receive God’s instructions. “Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth” (2TI.2.15, Amplified Bible). It is when we make it our purpose to study God’s Word on a daily basis, that we receive the instructions of God that prepare us for the tests of life that come our way. These tests are bound to come and there is no way around it. Jesus said “In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties. But take heart! I’ve conquered the world” (JHN.16.33, The Message). Therefore, as believers we must not only hear, read, and study the Word, but put it into action through practical application to ensure we are prepared for the tests that will eventually come our way.
