DAY 18 OF 21

JohnBlog - Word&Light Day 18 Jesus, eternal communication of God, came to His own and His own did not receive Him. This was true in respect of his immediate family, his hometown, his people, their leaders, the Imperial Roman Empire and true of all humankind. How could the source of life have come to the life he made and not be recognized? Because most men and women at the time, as now, were wrapped up to distraction, enjoying the beauty created for them: scintillating senses of touch, taste, smell, hearing, sight, being and the autonomy to think and act, to pro-create, shape, make and destroy, bring order, correct, invent, explore, excite. It is not so much that people enjoy darkness. Few people I have met seem to enjoy evil. Most of the world spends its time doing what Jesus originally invited humans to do: be fruitful, multiply, bring order to the Earth. Enjoy! But in taking their eyes off the source of Life and in looking down at the dust and atoms of the earth from which, metaphorically and scientifically, they were formed, they have lost their way. Lost the plot. They have become less like God and more like the animal kingdom from which they were raised by the breath of God. So individual hopes and desires, lifestyles and longings and those of whole cultures, become dominated by the consumption of the good things Jesus created for us – food, beauty, intimacy, autonomy, power, knowledge, influence. In time these things become idols – things that block the Light of Jesus that shines in the darkness. And so, when the eternal light appeared on earth, in their darkness, eyesight adjusted to and degraded by the dim glow of idols, people did not recognize him. Jesus, shortly before his baptism: They are so like us Father and yet so unlike. So close, yet so far away. If only they could see. If only they cold share the sweetness of our conversation. How I long to gather them under my wings and rescue them from their blind wanderings. The Father: It will happen as you wish my beloved son. You will show them how to live. And then even more wonderfully, in a short while, you will live in them: I in you, you in me, we in them. The light of the world transplanted; our beloved sons of earth re-awakened.
