Loving Well & Loving Often

DAY 4 OF 4

Unspoken expectations Raise your hand if you’ve ever been mad about something without telling the person who upset you about it. Yup. Me too, friend. Unspoken expectations are incredibly detrimental to the growth and development of any relationship. Falling short of communicating our expectations will inevitably result in not only causing you to feel completely unfulfilled, but also causing the other person to feel utterly inadequate. Sometimes we think that because what we want is obvious to us it should be obvious to the people in our lives as well. We think that if they love us and know us they will know the desires of our heart and the way we were wired to feel love without any verbal direction. Even the most attentive and watchful individuals will still fall short of satisfying you if there’s no direction. Your desires, your expectations, and your feelings are valid. You’re allowed to have them, and you’re allowed to be loved in a way that you feel loved best. The people in your life that are building a relationship with you want to love you well. They want to succeed at making you happy and getting to know you. The least you can do is keep the guessing games out of it. What we should be working towards is being open and honest with not only how we desire to be treated, but also how things that are said and done make us feel. Opening up this conversation allows your counterpart the opportunity to be honest with you as well. The only thing standing in the way of an open and honest relationship is the ability to effectively and kindly communicate expectations. Challenge: Communicate with someone today an expectation that you’ve been waiting for them to figure out.
