[IMAGE CONTENT] NUMBERS 22-23: Yesterday, in Numbers 21, the Lord gave victory to the Israelites over the Amorites, and then over King Sihon. And because of Israel’s grumbling, the Lord sent poisonous snakes among them. When the people cried out to Moses, the Lord told him to make a snake and set it up on a pole. This is an unannounced picture of Christ. Can you name the famous chapter where Jesus mentions that snake? The book of Acts covers the story of what happened after Jesus’ death in 33 AD to Paul’s two-year house arrest that ended in 62 AD. Since only a few of the apostles are told about in this book, rather than ‘Acts of the Apostles’, others have suggested the name ‘Acts of the Holy Spirit’. The book shows the fulfillment of what Jesus meant that the disciples would be led into all truth, and what Jesus meant by building his church. (John 14:xx) In Acts we see the assembly of God’s people become a new entity including people from other ethnicities called the church. And we see Christianity moving from Jerusalem all the way to the world’s capital of Rome. This book For me (Phil), I have always enjoyed the adventure found in the book of Acts as Peter, Paul, and others take the Gospel farther and farther from Jerusalem, encountering numerous setbacks and much opposition. Each speech of the apostles is so full of meaning full and inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The miracles are stunning, and each one can be enjoyed as a parable relating to our lives. It was this book that influenced me as a teenager to say, “I want to be like Paul.” And it was while translating this book that Boas Maware— whom I employed to help me translate, decided that he wanted to follow Jesus rather than following his father as a shaman healer. Let’s pray. Dear heavenly Father and our Lord Christ Jesus, every day in this semester of our reading plan and in every chapter, please be with us. Holy Spirit, we ask You to illuminate our hearts and minds, and help us to apply what we read to ourselves.
