What Does God Say About Discipleship?

DAY 6 OF 7

Day 6

Live Missionally

Matthew 28:19

Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear “Living Missionally?”

Most people have the picture of dropping everything in the place where they are, packing their bags, and hopping on a flight to a remote place that hasn’t been touched with the Gospel yet. This is an undeniably important part of Christian Mission, but it isn’t the entire picture. Many of you might not have the means to travel overseas. That doesn’t exclude you from Jesus’ command to “make disciples of all nations,” though.

Living missionally means, first and foremost, that your perspective of everyday life needs to shift. You start viewing things from a Kingdom perspective: the people around you are not just outer shells, they are souls in need of a savior. The things you face are not products of a random universe, but are events that mold you into the person God wants you to be. Living on mission means that wherever you are, you are viewing those around you differently than you did before you were adopted into God’s Kingdom.

If you are investing your life into a Discipleship Group, you have an unbelievable opportunity to live missionally right at your fingertips. One small thing that I like to do with my groups is to make prayer rings. We write the names of missionaries our church is supporting and commit time every day to pray for them. As we begin praying for these missionaries daily, it becomes almost addictive. We start looking for other people to add to our rings, like family members, church staff, and friends and neighbors.

Then, something amazing happens. As we pray for the people around us, our hearts are filled with desire to see them come to know Jesus. It changes the way we think about them, which will change the way we interact with them. We start looking for ways to serve them better.

When Jesus told His disciples to “Go… and make disciples,” we can translate this: “As you go, make disciples.” The disciples weren’t doing something they hadn’t already been doing—they just started doing it in more places, starting in Judea, then Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

In my groups, we’ve found that one of the easiest and most practical ways to live missionally is to meet together in a public place. Many times, I don’t even have to approach someone to have a Gospel conversation with them; they come up to us and wonder what in the world we talk about all the time. I’ve heard stories of ladies meeting in coffee shops at the same time every week who eventually get asked by the baristas they see all the time just what is going on. That is automatically a way to share what the Lord is doing: they simply explain that they have some ladies who meet every week with the intention of becoming more Christlike.

Whether it’s building a relationship with your local barista, your hairstylist, a new friend at the gym, your neighbor down the street, some co-workers, or a woman who shares the same hobby as you, there are so many creative ways that you can be missional in your daily life!

About this Plan

What Does God Say About Discipleship?

We all know Jesus commands us to disciple others. But how are we supposed to do this in everyday life? How can women, no matter what stage of life they are in, be a disciple who makes disciples? This plan gives you a reference point to use time and time again in the years to come as women intentionally obey Jesus’ command to invest their lives into others.
