Good for Business

DAY 5 OF 5

Respect your boss Do you like your current boss? Do you respect him or her? The Christian faith is good for business because it values order and authority. God is a God of order and hates chaos. He has built divine authority into family and government to provide a valuable structure for everyday living that provides safety and security. He also values order in economic enterprises: “Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive” (Titus 2:9,10). Slavery in the Americas was brutal and repulsive. Slavery in the Roman world in biblical times was much milder and was practiced everywhere. Many, many early Christians were slaves. This passage does not endorse slavery; it merely recognized an immense reality and gave practical advice on how to navigate a world where people are subject to the will of others. What Paul wrote about servants back then applies to all employees today. Our Christian faith inspires us as employees to let our bosses dictate our daily agenda. They get to tell us what to do, and we try to please them, show them respect, show them honesty and integrity, and win their trust. An added bonus from God--not only will those values improve the company, but they also make God look good too.
