Becoming Thirsty

DAY 1 OF 6

## Becoming Thirsty People have been using the emergence of a new year to usher in fresh beginnings for thousands of years. We often reflect on the closing year or change in seasons looking optimistically toward the possibilities ahead. We call these possibilities resolutions . Trends center on improving appearances or our physical well-being. Today the most popular resolutions include the desire to lose weight, exercise more, and reduce stress levels. Positive optimism and determination for a healthier lifestyle is commendable. Sometimes and for particular people, life can depend upon it. By all means be resolute in the keeping of your health. But shouldn’t the life of a Christian be marked by more than improving personal appearances and our physical wellbeing? Shouldn’t you and I exude at least the same determination and single-mindedness in our spiritual pursuits--yearning to reflect more of the character and person of Christ? Shouldn’t we ache for this with earnest decidedness? Shouldn’t we become thirsty for a more passionate pursuit of Jesus? Absolutely. Too often we don’t. You and I resign ourselves to a false reality that it’s just not going to happen. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be. Matthew 6:21 We tend to interpret this verse as if it were speaking of a bank robber with a pile of gold. What a person possesses defines their heart’s desire. It’s already set and there’s nothing we can do about it. But the Bible communicates a greater message. We can aim our hearts toward the treasure we want to desire. What if you could become a little thirstier for the treasures found in Jesus? For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. Philippians 2:13 Philippians promises God will give you the desire and the power to do what you cannot . But please understand. It’s not like a quick fix diet. If you’re looking for a spiritual quest equal to a diet plan enabling you to drop pounds and inches without altering your habit of eating cheeseburgers with chocolate shakes every day– THIS is not your jam. There are no shortcuts for developing a passionate pursuit of Jesus. And sometimes the pursuit feels a lot like swallowing dirt. The first step to becoming thirsty is to keep drinking even if it tastes like sand. Push through. You’ll be amazed at how satisfying He becomes.
