## The Magi Believed We have taken a look at how Mary, Joseph, and Simeon prepared for the coming of Jesus and we have seen some similarities in all three. They believed, they acted, they praised, and they were all righteous. Now, we turn our attention to the Magi. Let’s ride along with them and see how they prepared for the arrival of the King. We are first introduced to the Magi through the gospel writer Matthew, who sets the timetable for us, “Sometime after Jesus was born in Bethlehem.” Scholars tell us that these were secular, pagan astronomers who were possible descendants of Noah’s three sons. Matthew also describes them as wise. Why were they considered wise? The Scriptures tell us that they were given two revelations from God. First, they were given a special sign—the star. Second, they were given the Old Testament prophecy about the birth of a King in Bethlehem, as told by the prophet Micah. The combination of these two revelations helped these wise men put two and two together and believe that something of cosmic importance was happening. Being wise, they determined that they did not want to miss this. So they set off to find this King and to worship Him. In other words, just like Mary, Joseph, and Simeon, they saw the signs of the King and they believed! In contrast, King Herod and his advisors also had the Scriptures, specifically the prophet Micah who foretold of the birth of the King of the Jews in Bethlehem. When the Magi approached Herod and inquired where this King of the Jews had been born, his response was not one of belief. Matthew tells us that he was troubled and he began plotting to get rid of this One who had been born and who threatened to take his throne. The Magi were wise because they saw the signs, read the Scriptures, and believed that a king beyond compare had been born. They came to worship Him and brought gifts fit to honor the newborn King because of their belief. Herod, on the other hand, was troubled because he was soon to lose his power unless he could eradicate this threat. The Wise Men believed that an extraordinary King had come. What do you believe?
