The Guiding Star

DAY 5 OF 7

The Star Instills Exceeding Joy The clue leading them to Bethlehem is literally leading them to a haystack to find a needle. At this point as they are leaving the palace the star which they saw in the east appears and this time it is moving. It is leading them right to Jesus’ house. They are so excited to see this after probably thinking that they are at a dead end. With even more enthusiasm with which one greets a long lost friend, the Magis’ excitement knew no bounds when they saw the star. The long journey in pursuit of God’s guidance with all its challenges always brings joy - more than any other journey. The apostle Paul’s encouragement to “rejoice always” is a perk of this journey alone. There are the “Eureka” moments of surprise and discovery as the Magi experienced here. There are the deep moments of peace and joy even in the midst of difficulties knowing God is in control. There is a sense of purpose that gives fulfillment knowing our work is always productive There is a sense of comfort knowing our leader is the most competent – God Himself There is a joy in serving in whatever small way we can, the one who gave His all for us. There is a joy of anticipation of even greater things ahead – and in the next phase of life. This is not a joy like anything the world can give. This joy never leaves unless we choose to divert from our path. This is the joy of discipleship, of following Jesus. A joy that overshadows all the costs and sacrifices we may have to make. That trusts amidst the deepest tragedies. This joy is contagious. It spreads to those whom we encounter. It transforms lives. It lifts spirits. The lives of the Magi would never be the same again. Though they were under threat of death and hunted down, they had found the ruler of the universe. Though they had to flee to their country, history they continued to follow the progress of Jesus. Though the Bible doesn’t confirm it, history records they won many to Jesus, after His death and resurrection, that they became believers. That they influenced several lives around them. It isn’t hard to conclude that this must have been the case. Is our relationship with Jesus so deep that we are experiencing this overflowing joy at all times?
