 <div class="label">34</div><div class="s1">The Lord Will Be Israel&#8217;s Shepherd</div><div class="p"> 1The word of the Lord came to me: 2&#8220;Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy and say to them: &#8216;This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Woe to you shepherds of Israel who only take care of yourselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock? 3You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock. 4You have not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or bound up the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally. 5So they were scattered because there was no shepherd, and when they were scattered they became food for all the wild animals. 6My sheep wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. They were scattered over the whole earth, and no one searched or looked for them.</div><div class="p"> 7&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 8As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, because my flock lacks a shepherd and so has been plundered and has become food for all the wild animals, and because my shepherds did not search for my flock but cared for themselves rather than for my flock, 9therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 10This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against the shepherds and will hold them accountable for my flock. I will remove them from tending the flock so that the shepherds can no longer feed themselves. I will rescue my flock from their mouths, and it will no longer be food for them.</div><div class="p"> 11&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them. 12As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness. 13I will bring them out from the nations and gather them from the countries, and I will bring them into their own land. I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in all the settlements in the land. 14I will tend them in a good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel will be their grazing land. There they will lie down in good grazing land, and there they will feed in a rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. 15I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down, declares the Sovereign Lord. 16I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy. I will shepherd the flock with justice.</div><div class="p"> 17&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;As for you, my flock, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will judge between one sheep and another, and between rams and goats. 18Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture? Must you also trample the rest of your pasture with your feet? Is it not enough for you to drink clear water? Must you also muddy the rest with your feet? 19Must my flock feed on what you have trampled and drink what you have muddied with your feet?</div><div class="p"> 20&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says to them: See, I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. 21Because you shove with flank and shoulder, butting all the weak sheep with your horns until you have driven them away, 22I will save my flock, and they will no longer be plundered. I will judge between one sheep and another. 23I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them; he will tend them and be their shepherd. 24I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David will be prince among them. I the Lord have spoken.</div><div class="p"> 25&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;I will make a covenant of peace with them and rid the land of savage beasts so that they may live in the wilderness and sleep in the forests in safety. 26I will make them and the places surrounding my hill a blessing.#34:26 Or I will cause them and the places surrounding my hill to be named in blessings (see Gen. 48:20); or I will cause them and the places surrounding my hill to be seen as blessed I will send down showers in season; there will be showers of blessing. 27The trees will yield their fruit and the ground will yield its crops; the people will be secure in their land. They will know that I am the Lord, when I break the bars of their yoke and rescue them from the hands of those who enslaved them. 28They will no longer be plundered by the nations, nor will wild animals devour them. They will live in safety, and no one will make them afraid. 29I will provide for them a land renowned for its crops, and they will no longer be victims of famine in the land or bear the scorn of the nations. 30Then they will know that I, the Lord their God, am with them and that they, the Israelites, are my people, declares the Sovereign Lord. 31You are my sheep, the sheep of my pasture, and I am your God, declares the Sovereign Lord.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">35</div><div class="s1">A Prophecy Against Edom</div><div class="p"> 1The word of the Lord came to me: 2&#8220;Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir; prophesy against it 3and say: &#8216;This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Mount Seir, and I will stretch out my hand against you and make you a desolate waste. 4I will turn your towns into ruins and you will be desolate. Then you will know that I am the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 5&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Because you harbored an ancient hostility and delivered the Israelites over to the sword at the time of their calamity, the time their punishment reached its climax, 6therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will give you over to bloodshed and it will pursue you. Since you did not hate bloodshed, bloodshed will pursue you. 7I will make Mount Seir a desolate waste and cut off from it all who come and go. 8I will fill your mountains with the slain; those killed by the sword will fall on your hills and in your valleys and in all your ravines. 9I will make you desolate forever; your towns will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 10&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Because you have said, &#8220;These two nations and countries will be ours and we will take possession of them,&#8221; even though I the Lord was there, 11therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will treat you in accordance with the anger and jealousy you showed in your hatred of them and I will make myself known among them when I judge you. 12Then you will know that I the Lord have heard all the contemptible things you have said against the mountains of Israel. You said, &#8220;They have been laid waste and have been given over to us to devour.&#8221; 13You boasted against me and spoke against me without restraint, and I heard it. 14This is what the Sovereign Lord says: While the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate. 15Because you rejoiced when the inheritance of Israel became desolate, that is how I will treat you. You will be desolate, Mount Seir, you and all of Edom. Then they will know that I am the Lord.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">13</div><div class="s1">A Prophecy Against Babylon</div><div class="p"> 1A prophecy against Babylon that Isaiah son of Amoz saw:</div><div class="q1"> 2Raise a banner on a bare hilltop,</div><div class="q2">shout to them;</div><div class="q1">beckon to them</div><div class="q2">to enter the gates of the nobles.</div><div class="q1"> 3I have commanded those I prepared for battle;</div><div class="q2">I have summoned my warriors to carry out my wrath&#8212;</div><div class="q2">those who rejoice in my triumph.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 4Listen, a noise on the mountains,</div><div class="q2">like that of a great multitude!</div><div class="q1">Listen, an uproar among the kingdoms,</div><div class="q2">like nations massing together!</div><div class="q1">The Lord Almighty is mustering</div><div class="q2">an army for war.</div><div class="q1"> 5They come from faraway lands,</div><div class="q2">from the ends of the heavens&#8212;</div><div class="q1">the Lord and the weapons of his wrath&#8212;</div><div class="q2">to destroy the whole country.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 6Wail, for the day of the Lord is near;</div><div class="q2">it will come like destruction from the Almighty.#13:6 Hebrew Shaddai</div><div class="q1"> 7Because of this, all hands will go limp,</div><div class="q2">every heart will melt with fear.</div><div class="q1"> 8Terror will seize them,</div><div class="q2">pain and anguish will grip them;</div><div class="q2">they will writhe like a woman in labor.</div><div class="q1">They will look aghast at each other,</div><div class="q2">their faces aflame.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 9See, the day of the Lord is coming</div><div class="q2">&#8212;a cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger&#8212;</div><div class="q1">to make the land desolate</div><div class="q2">and destroy the sinners within it.</div><div class="q1"> 10The stars of heaven and their constellations</div><div class="q2">will not show their light.</div><div class="q1">The rising sun will be darkened</div><div class="q2">and the moon will not give its light.</div><div class="q1"> 11I will punish the world for its evil,</div><div class="q2">the wicked for their sins.</div><div class="q1">I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty</div><div class="q2">and will humble the pride of the ruthless.</div><div class="q1"> 12I will make people scarcer than pure gold,</div><div class="q2">more rare than the gold of Ophir.</div><div class="q1"> 13Therefore I will make the heavens tremble;</div><div class="q2">and the earth will shake from its place</div><div class="q1">at the wrath of the Lord Almighty,</div><div class="q2">in the day of his burning anger.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 14Like a hunted gazelle,</div><div class="q2">like sheep without a shepherd,</div><div class="q1">they will all return to their own people,</div><div class="q2">they will flee to their native land.</div><div class="q1"> 15Whoever is captured will be thrust through;</div><div class="q2">all who are caught will fall by the sword.</div><div class="q1"> 16Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes;</div><div class="q2">their houses will be looted and their wives violated.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 17See, I will stir up against them the Medes,</div><div class="q2">who do not care for silver</div><div class="q2">and have no delight in gold.</div><div class="q1"> 18Their bows will strike down the young men;</div><div class="q2">they will have no mercy on infants,</div><div class="q2">nor will they look with compassion on children.</div><div class="q1"> 19Babylon, the jewel of kingdoms,</div><div class="q2">the pride and glory of the Babylonians,#13:19 Or Chaldeans</div><div class="q1">will be overthrown by God</div><div class="q2">like Sodom and Gomorrah.</div><div class="q1"> 20She will never be inhabited</div><div class="q2">or lived in through all generations;</div><div class="q1">there no nomads will pitch their tents,</div><div class="q2">there no shepherds will rest their flocks.</div><div class="q1"> 21But desert creatures will lie there,</div><div class="q2">jackals will fill her houses;</div><div class="q1">there the owls will dwell,</div><div class="q2">and there the wild goats will leap about.</div><div class="q1"> 22Hyenas will inhabit her strongholds,</div><div class="q2">jackals her luxurious palaces.</div><div class="q1">Her time is at hand,</div><div class="q2">and her days will not be prolonged.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="b"></div>

 <div class="label">9</div><div class="s1">Worship in the Earthly Tabernacle</div><div class="p"> 1Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary. 2A tabernacle was set up. In its first room were the lampstand and the table with its consecrated bread; this was called the Holy Place. 3Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place, 4which had the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered ark of the covenant. This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron&#8217;s staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant. 5Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory, overshadowing the atonement cover. But we cannot discuss these things in detail now.</div><div class="p"> 6When everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly into the outer room to carry on their ministry. 7But only the high priest entered the inner room, and that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance. 8The Holy Spirit was showing by this that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still functioning. 9This is an illustration for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshiper. 10They are only a matter of food and drink and various ceremonial washings&#8212;external regulations applying until the time of the new order.</div><div class="s1">The Blood of Christ</div><div class="p"> 11But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here,#9:11 Some early manuscripts are to come he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining#9:12 Or blood, having obtained eternal redemption. 13The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death,#9:14 Or from useless rituals so that we may serve the living God!</div><div class="p"> 15For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance&#8212;now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.</div><div class="p"> 16In the case of a will,#9:16 Same Greek word as covenant; also in verse 17 it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, 17because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. 18This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood. 19When Moses had proclaimed every command of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves, together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people. 20He said, &#8220;This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep.&#8221;#9:20 Exodus 24:8 21In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies. 22In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.</div><div class="p"> 23It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God&#8217;s presence. 25Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. 26Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.</div>
