Read Psalm 119:97–104 97 Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long. 98 Your commands are always with me and make me wiser than my enemies. 99 I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes. 100 I have more understanding than the elders, for I obey your precepts. 101 I have kept my feet from every evil path so that I might obey your word. 102 I have not departed from your laws, for you yourself have taught me. 103 How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! 104 I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path. Understanding the Bible A favourite cartoon of mine shows a young man with a Bible talking to a friend over the phone. He says, “I think I’ve made one of the first steps towards unravelling the mysteries of the Old Testament . . . I’m starting to read it!” Psalm 119 describes the writer’s hunger to read and think about God’s Word each day. “Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long” (v. 97). Reading the Bible daily will help us to become wise and know God better (vv. 98–100). Understanding the Bible doesn’t require a high IQ. We just need to set aside time to read what it has to say, and then live out the lessons God reveals to us. There will be bits of the Bible that seem confusing to us now, but as we spend more time reading and studying it, God will reveal its truths to us and they will make sense. Over time, we will find ourselves saying, “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path” (vv. 103–104). —DM Understanding the Bible starts with reading the Bible. And... Action!
