Created For Community: Lessons From Acts 2

DAY 2 OF 5

#### Christ-centered community in the Early Church Centuries separate Genesis 1 and Acts 2, yet the scenes are surprisingly reminiscent: Again, we see God extending Himself in Trinity to draw people into a flourishing relationship with Him, one another, and the world. Acts 2 describes a crowd of thousands of Jews from many countries, gathered in the bustling city of Jerusalem for a temple feast. Imagine the sound of dozens of languages ringing out as people call to family members; the smell of the various ethnic dishes being prepared; the array of faces and styles of dress; the diverse stories, ages, and social classes represented. Then, in a miraculous display of power, God transforms these isolated cells into one body. His Spirit descends, uniting 3,000 new believers and His disciples to form the Church. Yet it doesn’t end there, in one day of dramatic, life-changing connection. Instead, the out-of-towners move in, and this diverse group must learn to commune together. Pastor and author Tim Keller identifies five characteristics that mark this new faith community: vibrant worship; deep, dynamic, and loving fellowship; teaching with theological depth; evangelism; and compassionate social concern. Although this expression of the Church didn’t last forever, the same Spirit that inspired believers then remains at work in the Body of Christ today. Acts 2 still offers a vision of a community that is at once beautiful and simple: believers sharing meals, generously giving to those in need, and worshipping together. #### Action * Host a potluck with fellow believers and consider singing or praying together. Resist the temptation to make it a fancy affair—just enjoy each other’s presence, intentionally welcoming the Holy Spirit among you. * Afterward, reflect on the experience. What about the time challenged you? What filled you with joy? What did it offer that your typical mealtimes don’t? Did you experience any of the defining marks of the community displayed by the Early Church?
