1,000,000 Chapters – Part 8

DAY 1 OF 21

“You do you!” If you’ve spent any time around someone younger than 30 you’ve probably heard this phrase uttered at some point. There is a positive side to this phrase that provides encouragement to not be afraid to be yourself and to be okay with the person that God has made you to be. However, there can also be a very dangerous way that this phrase can take shape. The danger behind the “you do you” mindset is that it often feeds the idea of I should get to do whatever I want to do because it makes me feel good. Followers of Jesus can sometimes fall into the trap of thinking that Jesus has forgiven me and just wants me to feel good. The problem is that what feels good in the moment is not what is best for us in the long run. Jude is a letter written by one of Jesus’ half-brothers who was writing to a mostly Jewish Christian audience. He wrote this letter to combat some false teaching that feel into the “you do you” mindset and caused the people to be living immoral lives that didn’t measure up to what Jesus wanted for them. When you’re reading this letter consider what ways you’ve let a “you do you” mindset creep into your life. Where do you think Jesus would challenge you be more faithful to him in your life? After today’s reading of Jude, the rest of the reading for this plan will cover more Psalms from the Old Testament. When you’re reading these songs of God’s people let the words of the songs inform and challenge you to think about ways that God wants to work in your life.
