The Names of God

Tag 8 von 8

Jehovah El Roi translated means God sees or it could also mean God sees me depending on how you pronounce the Roi. This Name was coined by Hagar, a servant woman who was working for Sara and Abraham. The story is that Abraham and Sara are unable to have a child and despite God’s promise to them, they took matters into their own hands and made Abraham lay with Hagar. When she conceives, we see that Sara and Hagar have a conflict and Abraham tells Sara that she is her servant and she can do with her as she pleases. She dealt harshly with Hagar, which resulted in her fleeing from there, into the wilderness. Hagar is in a difficult situation because she is now rejected by her community, and her employers and has no one to turn to. It could not get any worse. Are there times in our own lives when we think that as well? No one really understands me, no one gets what I’m going through, no one seems to care, it’s not my fault but here I am. Hagar felt like that. But God, who is righteous and just, regardless of the folly of Abraham and Sara, saw Hagar. She responds with gratitude and goes on to call the place El Roi meaning the God who sees me. It's such an important truth to know that God’s eyes are on us. That He sees us. The eyes of the Lord are on His people continually. The Psalmist tells us that even darkness is like light to the Lord, there is no place we can go to get away from God (Psalm 139:7-12). The point is not that there is no place we can run away from God, rather, it is that when we think we are stranded, abandoned, all alone, God is watching. That is the beautiful aspect that Hagar recognises here. We see this throughout Scripture, that God is always there. Psalm 34 doesn’t explicitly state this Name, but it talks about God’s character where He delivers us from all our fears (v4). Whether it’s our feelings, our fears, our shame, or things we might be embarrassed with, whatever it may be, The Lord is watching, He encamps around you. He is a God who sees no matter what. Reflection: What a beautiful reassurance that God is a God who sees. He’s not standing there like an authority waiting for you to slip up, instead, He has love and compassion for us. He cares for us and delivers us. Prayer: Thank You Lord, for the amazing reassurance that no matter how alone or abandoned we feel, You are always there, looking out for us, as a loving parent over His child. In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen. As we come to the end of this devotional series, take time to ponder on the Names of God and how important it is to know Him personally.
