### Jesus is the promised King “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end.” (Isaiah 9:6-7) The people of Israel had many kings, some of whom reigned well and others reigned badly. But one king was special: David. The Bible says he was a man after God’s heart. He also had his flaws, but when he had sinned, he turned back to the Lord and asked for forgiveness. He took God’s commandments seriously and led the people to do the same. David was succeeded by his son Solomon. And God promised him something very special: the throne of David’s kingdom would be established forever. His royal line would never end! (2 Samuel 7:16). The books of Kings and Chronicles describe how David’s son, grandson, and so on reigned for centuries. But finally, the people of Israel were sent into exile and they did not have their own king anymore. Had God broken His promise?? No, He had not. Centuries later, a Son of David was born in Bethlehem. His name was Jesus. His birth was announced by an angel, who foretold that the Lord God would give Him the throne of His father David and that of His kingdom there would be no end (Luke 1:32-33). He was the ultimate King the people were desperately waiting for, but His reign was different from what they expected. We’ll read more about that tomorrow.
