Think of all the things that make you happy: ice cream, sunsets, your favorite song on the radio, and your sports team winning a big game. Think of the smile that forms on your face when those things happen. Now think of how you feel when the ice cream melts, the sun has set, your song gets overplayed, and your team just lost. You’re not so happy anymore.

Jesus tells us that we won’t just have happiness when we obey Him, but we will have complete joy. Happiness is fleeting and joy is lasting. The joy we receive as we walk with Jesus and obey Him can still be present even when our ice cream melts and our team loses. The joy we find in Jesus comes from living in a close relationship with Him.
