Knowledge and Love
1 Corinthians 8:1-3
“…Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. The man who thinks he knows something does not yet know as he ought to know. But the man who loves God is known by God.”
When knowledge, even spiritual knowledge, is based on pride, it doesn’t build up others. Pride uses that knowledge to inflate our own importance, power or control, rather than for serving others for their strengthening. Biblical knowledge always includes obedience in humility. Love motivates us to use knowledge to strengthen, equip and encourage others. When we love others, we use knowledge (knowing) to build relationship with them. This relational outcome of knowledge rooted in humility and love is what God offers to us. Our response to the gospel, also based in humble, loving knowledge opens a relationship with God and with his global family. God knows us in Christ, and because of his gospel of grace, we know him in response.
Lord Jesus, I repent of using knowledge for myself rather than for serving others in love. Fill me with your love and the knowledge of your will, and fill me with your Spirit’s power to obey you this day.
