(Not) Seeing and Believing

DAG 1 AF 10

### Seeing and believing These two words don’t belong together. If we believe something only when we see it, our faith doesn’t count for much. People don’t hope for or believe in something they already see. This is why Hebrews 11:1 says that faith is focused on things not seen. Some of these are in the future and will become visible at God’s time. Think for example of life after death and the new heavens and earth that Jesus will create at the end of time. The author of Hebrews mentions some more examples: Abraham believed that he would have a son because God had promised him that he would; Noah believed that the flood would come because God had foretold it, and so on. Other things will never be visible to human eyes. An example of this is: “By faith, we understand that the universe was created by the word of God” (Hebrews 11:3). Other examples are the existence of God and His love for humans. These facts are only visible indirectly, with ‘eyes of faith’. Do you find it hard to believe in things you can’t see?
