What does the Bible mean by “church”?

In 1 Corinthians 14:23, Paul speaks of “...the whole church comes together into one place...” In some instances, the Bible uses the word “church” to refer to all believers. But most often, the word “church” describes a local gathering of God’s people.

A church is not just an idea or a building. It is a visible group of believers who meet to worship, pray, and learn God’s Word together. That is why Paul wrote letters to specific churches, such as Corinth, Galatia, and Ephesus.

This truth reminds us that God’s design is for Christians to assemble. We need the teaching, accountability, and encouragement that only come from gathering with others.

So, we should not take church lightly. Make it a priority to be faithful in attendance and to invest in the body of believers God has placed you in. When the church meets, every member matters—including you.
