Trauma & The Great Physician

The Lord wants to heal you. God WANTS to heal you. He can heal you. He will heal you. Why not today?

Scripture says the Father knows every hair on our head and that no tear goes unseen. Our pain and broken-heartedness are not meant to be a life sentence. But healing often does require our participation.

"The Lord your God will change your heart and the hearts of all your descendants so that you will love him with all your heart and soul, and so you may live!" Deuteronomy 30:6 (NLT)

Oh, I praise God for my changed heart!

My mother was killed when I was just 17 months old. I was raised by an alcoholic father. I endured sexual abuse for a decade. From ages 14 to 21, I suffered unspeakable abuse in a relationship. I gave birth to two children during those seven years and raised them alone as a single mom. Then, in 2016, I lost everything I owned when my neighborhood was flooded with torrential rains that destroyed my home. And that's just a snippet of the trauma I've experienced.

I've endured death, disappointment, betrayal, and deep heartache. My dear friend, I know trauma. I know the heaviness in your chest that makes you feel like you can't breathe. I know it well. I know the pain that makes you wonder if life is even worth living. But I also know healing. Today, I sit here rejoicing because of everything the Lord has done for me. My God has completely, radically, and undeniably healed me. And this healing is for you, too. He is the Great Physician, the Healer, the One who makes all things new. He brings beauty from ashes. He has collected the many tears we've shed and will make some beautiful with it. Sometimes, healing is instantaneous. More often, it's a process. Here are some things the Lord taught me through my own healing process.

  1. Activate your faith. God has already given you what you need. To receive healing—emotional or physical—you must activate your faith. You already have it! It is faith that gives you the ability to believe Christ died and rose for you and brought you to salvation. Now, it's time to grow and stretch it. Ask God to help your unbelief. When Christ hung on the Cross, He paid for salvation, transformation, redemption, deliverance, and healing.
  2. Evaluate what you believe. Our beliefs are often shaped by experience, family, and authority figures. As we walk with the Holy Spirit and study God's Word, we must begin to examine what we believe. Ask: Is this truth from the Bible or a lie I've picked up along the way and agreed with? Right beliefs are what spearhead our healing.
  3. Identify the truth. Real healing starts when lies are replaced with truth. For example, if you believe, "I'll never be good enough," you will likely struggle to heal when someone has called you worthless or abandoned you in the past. However, when compared to God's Word, which illustrates that we are blessed, highly favored, and more than enough, we see hope. Truth is what will set us free. And that truth is found through His Word.
  4. Don't ignore unforgiveness. Healing cannot take root in a heart that still clings to bitterness and unforgiveness. This is something we must deal with.

Points to Ponder:

  • Are you willing to participate in your own healing? God is ready to heal, but are you ready to surrender, trust, and do the heart work required, no matter how painful or uncomfortable?
  • What beliefs are you holding onto that don't align with God's truth?
