The Power of Agreement

The power of agreement in the spirit realm is huge. What and who we agree with matters.

As we've discussed, our words carry incredible power and can often land us in deep spiritual trouble or can shift an immense spiritual breakthrough in our lives. The power of agreement is important to consider. Check out today's Scripture in Matthew 18:19. We see that when two Believers gather and agree on a matter, our Heavenly Father will do it. In other words, when someone needs healing, find another Believer who will agree in the spirit with you and pray regarding this matter. Likewise, if someone needs a miracle in their finances, two Christians can gather and pray, petitioning the Lord for a supernatural miracle. Agreements matter.

Look at Ecclesiastes 4:12 (NLT):

"A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken."

This further illustrates the power of agreement. As two or three Christians gather and agree, we see they are not easily broken. In other words, the agreement carries weight –agreeance in action, heart, and mouth. Becoming unstuck is about knowing what to agree with.

We see another example of agreement in Genesis 25-27. Admittedly, the story of Esau and his brother, Jacob, once puzzled me as a young Sunday School student. Esau lost both his birthright and his blessings, hinging on spoken words. First, he traded his birthright for a bowl of stew. Later, his father, Isaac, was deceived into speaking the firstborn blessing for Jacob instead of Esau. At the time, I remember thinking, "Why not just reverse the blessing if it was issued in error? Isaac could simply bless Esau instead." But I hadn't yet grasped the spiritual law of the spoken Word. Words spoken in covenant or blessing hold weight in the spirit realm. But we must also know that part of the story is that their mother, Rebekah, spearheaded this deceit. Jacob was her favorite child, and she was very much in agreement (both in Word and action) with Jacob deceiving his father to receive his brother's birthright. The power of agreement is strong! Watch who you agree with in Word and action.

We must not come into agreement with the enemy with our words or our actions. We've spent days dissecting the power of our tongue because it matters more than we've been taught to know! The lies the enemy whispers to us are the ways in which he strategizes, bringing death to our lives. He whispers lies that we aren't good enough or that we'll never make it out of the hardship we face today. And too often, we agree with him (even unintentionally). We begin to meditate on these lies in full agreement in our minds and hearts, and the results lead to poor decision-making or years of feeling stuck.

The lies are many, and we've even covered some in prior days, but here are others to consider:

  • "I'll never be enough."
  • "Nothing ever works out for me."
  • "This is just my cross to bear."
  • "I'll always be this way."

These may seem harmless or even humorous when said jokingly, but when they contradict God's Word, they empower the enemy and restrict your spiritual freedom. The unstuck life is one where we come out of agreement with the enemy's lies and character and come into agreement with the Lord's words and character. Instead of agreeing with defeat, lies, and death, we can declare what Scripture says about us, coming into agreement with the Lord. (Hint: Say these aloud!)

  • I am chosen, loved, and forgiven in Christ. (1 John 3:1, 1 John 1:9)
  • I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13)
  • I am blessed and highly favored. (Psalm 5:12)
  • My needs are fully met in Jesus. (Philippians 4:19)
  • I am healed by His stripes. (Isaiah 53:5, 1 Peter 2:24)
  • I have authority over the enemy. (Luke 10:19)

These truths are not just encouraging phrases. They are spiritual declarations backed by God's Word. Speak them boldly. Let your heart and mouth come into agreement with the truth. I AM a victor! I AM the head and not the tail! I CAN do all things! I have NOT been given the spirit of fear! They are endless, and what you agree with matters. Let your mouth come into agreement with heaven.

Points to Ponder:

  • What have you come into agreement with—intentionally or unintentionally—that contradicts God's Word? Words spoken in frustration, fear, or pain can still carry spiritual weight. Reflect on phrases you've said or believed that may have given the enemy access to your heart or mind.
  • What truth from God's Word do you need to declare daily that replaces lies you've agreed with? How might this intentional daily practice create freedom in your life?
