IMPRESS: A Parent's Guide to Passing on Faithنموونە

The “R” in IMPRESS is for Repetition.
We need to revise, revisit, backtrack, say again, and repeat the truths of Scripture - deepening their impression, little by little. It’s like sharpening a blade: you run the knife over the whetstone again and again. Passing on faith is much the same - it happens through small, intentional, repeated actions that shape our children’s lives and their walk with God over time.
Today we’re exploring Deuteronomy 11:18–21, a passage that echoes the well-known words of Deuteronomy 6 and in fact, it is a kind of repetition. It further emphasises the importance of embedding God’s Word not only in our own hearts, but also in the hearts of our children.
Moses instructs the Israelites to “fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds” (Deuteronomy 11:18 NIV) to make them central to their identity and woven into the fabric of everyday life. He encourages them to teach God’s Word diligently to their children, making it part of daily conversation. This includes talking about Scripture at home, while travelling, at bedtime, and first thing in the morning - essentially, in every part of life.
Moses also highlights the power of visual reminders: symbols on hands and foreheads, and words written on doorframes and gates. These serve as constant visual cues of God’s presence and promises.
As parents, we have the privilege and responsibility to pass on the legacy of faith to our kids. We do this by immersing ourselves and our families in God’s Word - not just once, but through consistent repetition that allows the truth to take root. This includes memorising scripture, weaving it into our conversations, and making it part of everyday life. We can reinforce this legacy through repeated prayers, memory verses, songs, gospel truths, and meaningful traditions—anything that helps embed the message of Christ deeply in our children's hearts.
Let’s take Moses’ words to heart: fix God’s Word in your life, teach it diligently to your children, and surround your family with tangible reminders of His truth. In doing so, we help our children experience the fullness of life that comes from walking closely with God.
Action
For You
Today, take intentional steps to embed God's Word in both your heart and the hearts of your children. Set aside time to read and reflect on Scripture together, allowing space for questions and conversation. Repetition deepens understanding - so return to the same passage across the week.
With Your Kids
Choose a Bible verse or short passage to memorise together as a family. Make it part of your daily routine—recite it at breakfast, bedtime, or in the car. Create visual reminders, such as Scripture art, chalkboard verses, or memory verse cards, and place them in key areas around your home to reinforce the message.
