IMPRESS: A Parent's Guide to Passing on Faith

The “M” of IMPRESS is for Meaning.

After Moses’ great speech in Deuteronomy, the Israelites’ next step was to journey into the Promised Land, led by Joshua.

In today’s passage, we see Joshua instruct the Israelites to set up a memorial of twelve stones taken from the Jordan River—a sign of God's faithfulness and miraculous provision. But notice that Joshua doesn’t stop there. He anticipates the questions that future generations, particularly children, might ask about these stones.

He instructs the Israelites to be ready with an answer when their children ask,

“What do these stones mean?”

Similarly, as parents, we have a responsibility to be ready to answer our children’s questions about faith, traditions, and the reasons behind what we do. Whether it's explaining the significance of certain Bible stories, the meaning of practices like prayer or communion, or the reasoning behind moral and ethical choices, we should be prepared to engage our children in meaningful conversations—offering answers rooted in Scripture and our own faith journey.

These teaching moments not only deepen our children's understanding of God and His ways, but also strengthen their faith and relationship with Him. When we take the time to explain and discuss spiritual truths with our children, we are sowing seeds of faith that can bear fruit for years to come.

Perhaps you feel nervous about these questions. Maybe you feel inadequate or underqualified. Let me reassure you: the Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives means we are equipped and prepared.

Take Jesus’ words in John 14:26 (NIV) to heart:

“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

When you don’t have the words, and you’re not sure what to say—allow the Holy Spirit to move and speak through you.

Action

For You

Reflect today on how you respond to your children’s questions about faith and spirituality. Are you ready to answer with wisdom and understanding? Take some time to study Scripture and familiarise yourself with key teachings and principles that you can share with your children.

With Your Kids

Be intentional about creating opportunities for meaningful conversations about faith and God’s Word. The next time you're on your way home from church, ask your kids what they heard, saw, and experienced. Then ask: “Do you have any questions?”

We find the word Impress in Deuteronomy 6, where Moses urges God’s people to pass on faith to the next generation. Based on her book Impress, Ainsley Freeman invites us in this reading plan to rediscover how we can leave a lasting faith legacy for our kids. Even in today’s busy homes, we can share God’s story in relevant and engaging ways. Using IMPRESS as an acronym, this plan outlines seven practical principles to help you make passing on faith a clear and compelling priority in your home.
