Evangelize Everywhere: Work Edition

When it comes to having faith conversations at work, there are a few essential reminders for us to be successful in witnessing. First, let me take some of the pressure off of thinking that your coworker has to get saved for you to be “successful” in your efforts. Not to limit God, as that would be amazing if your coworkers accepted Jesus right then and there as you share your faith in Jesus with them, but that may not always be the case. We have to be okay with the fact that success for us may be that we plant the seed and trust that God will send someone to water it, so that He will eventually get the increase (1 Corinthians 3:5-8).

Our role in each person's journey that we encounter as we share the good news of Jesus will be different, and your story may be what prompts them to return to church, whether it’s your church or another Bible-believing church —that’s still a win! Or perhaps it becomes a Bible study on break with them, or even an employee resource group for Christians at your company. The possibilities are endless when you are bold and willing to share your faith.

Another reminder is to consider how you have the conversation. The Bible tells us that a soft answer turns away wrath (Proverbs 15:1). This doesn't mean you will necessarily make your coworkers angry, although this is a possibility. However, you must consider how to answer and share your faith with love. To do this, you must exercise the fruit of the Spirit and be patient with the process of evangelism. We cannot be combative in how we share with a person who may be an unbeliever for the sake of defending the gospel in this environment. Our first job is to show them the love of Christ.

I would encourage you to show them the love of Christ before you Bible-thump and judge them for their lifestyle. Understand that you may be dealing with people who don’t view the Bible as the source of truth, so quoting scriptures may not be as effective. One tip in navigating that is to use the principle of the scripture without explicitly saying the chapter and verse. Making a biblically accurate statement without giving the chapter/verse helps alleviate any challenges with the Bible. But if they ask, then of course, say your response comes from scripture. Ultimately, what I want you to take away from these statements is that to win them, you need to love them well.

Take the time to get to know them and their life experiences. This often reveals where the enemy has distorted their perspective on faith and may lead you to a more effective approach for sharing your faith at work. I believe these reminders help us in our efforts to witness at work. Always remember to witness in love and be okay with knowing that your role may have just been to plant the seed.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the reminder that my job is to show the love of Christ to my coworkers. By showing them love, I can trust that you love them more. Even in my efforts to witness, I can take the pressure off myself because you love them too, and you are faithful to send someone to water that seed. In Jesus’ name, amen!
