The Biggest Prayer

When we face difficulties in life, our tendency is to ask God for help to overcome those challenges. Some pray for big things, asking God to perform miracles to help us resolve issues or take away obstacles. While we may be familiar with Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane, I wonder how many of us truly pray like He did: “May Your will be done”, and genuinely mean it when facing hardships.

Before the crucifixion, knowing exactly what would happen and that He would face the ultimate consequence of sin, Jesus was afflicted with deep sorrow. He went to the Garden of Gethsemane with His close friends and prayed for the cup to be taken away, earnestly desiring that the suffering be taken from Him (Matthew 26:38-39, 42-44).

What makes this prayer profound lies at the end of the sentence. It is not a request for God to simply ease the situation, but rather a prayer in which Jesus surrendered His will to God. The significance of this prayer is not merely in the ask, but in the give – giving away our will. Surrendering our will to God is, in fact, the greatest prayer one can make.

Whether we admit it or not, when we choose to follow Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, we are basically giving up our rights to live as we wish. As Christians, we are called to take up our cross daily. If we continue to follow our own will, we are essentially rejecting the Lordship of Jesus Christ in our lives.

Right now, you may not be facing circumstances that require you to pray big prayers asking for miracles to resolve issues. But if you reflect on your daily life, how often do you truly pray the bigger prayer – the surrender of your will to follow God’s will? Today, spend time listening to God on how you can free up time or resources to follow His will.
