Being a Responsible Manager

Navigating middle management in a typical company can be challenging. You’re tasked with overseeing resources that aren’t your own and making decisions that serve the broader interests of the organisation. You receive a budget with the directive to operate within its limits. Spend too much, and you’ll need to justify your choices; spend too little, and you risk a reduced budget in the next fiscal year. It’s a delicate balance, knowing you should invest wisely while avoiding reckless spending.

The Bible teaches us that we are all entrusted as managers of the resources God has provided us. Everything we own is ultimately a stewardship from Him, much like a budget that carries an expectation for responsible use. Jesus frequently addresses the concept of stewardship, highlighting two key areas of concern: the misuse of resources and hoarding.

In the parable of the wise manager, Jesus illustrates that a good steward fulfils the expectations of their master by wisely managing the resources entrusted to them. In the parable of the talents, it is the servant who fails to invest and grow what he has been given faces judgment. These teachings remind us that our actions with what we have matter significantly in God’s eyes.

What is your attitude toward your resources? Do you see them as a manager would, or do you view them as an owner? More importantly, if you were called to give an account of how you’ve utilised your “budget”, would you find that you’ve largely misused it or hoarded it?

Today, take a moment to evaluate your spending habits. As you do, consider whether your resources are being used in a way that aligns with God’s intentions.
