So, What Actually is the Tithe?

The concept of tithing often confuses people. Is it merely a tip for enjoying a worship service? Is it an obligation for followers of Jesus? The answer might surprise you.

The term “tithe” literally means 10%. In ancient Israel, people were commanded to bring a tithe, 10% of their harvest, to the Lord. This portion was shared in a meal with God, given to priests for their sustenance, and occasionally used to help those in need, such as orphans and widows. Essentially, the tithe served to support worship, community needs, and the work of the priests. However, the New Testament introduces a shift. Paul teaches that we are not bound to give a strict 10%. He encourages us to set aside a sum in keeping with our income, indicating that the amount we give is ultimately at our discretion.

Yet, this does not mean we should aim for the minimum. In fact, the standard for followers of Christ is higher. Jesus challenges us with statements like, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor” (Matthew 19:21) and “Anyone who does not give up everything cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:33). In both of these instances, Jesus challenges us to give up 100%, not merely 10% of what we have.

So, rather than asking, “How much should I give?” We should consider, “How much can I keep?” Today, take a moment to evaluate your spending and reflect on whether your lifestyle truly aligns with the wholehearted commitment Jesus calls us to. Instead of wondering whether you can give 10% back to God each month, ask yourself whether you can justify a lifestyle that consumes the rest of the 90%!
