Uncharted: Ruach, Spirit of God

Just as damaging as a madman shooting a deadly weapon is someone who lies to a friend and then says, “I was only joking.” — Proverbs 26:18–19 (NLT)

Words are powerful. What we say, even when disguised as a “joke,” can wound deeply. This verse challenges us to take responsibility for our speech and stop hiding behind humor to excuse harmful words. It's easy to laugh things off or say we “didn’t mean it,” but God calls us to integrity, even in our jokes. Kindness, honesty, and respect should mark our conversations, not sarcasm or cruelty.

Pay attention to your words today, especially in casual conversations. Before you joke or speak impulsively, ask yourself: Would I still say this if I couldn’t take it back? Choose encouragement over entertainment.

Prayer:

Lord, help me to speak with wisdom and kindness. Let my words build up, not tear down. Teach me to be mindful of the impact I have on others, and give me the humility to make things right when I’ve caused hurt. Amen.
