Glory of God

Are you listening?

The young man ran hard and long to escape. He had been in an amazing battle. He had been the victor, but the enemy had sworn revenge, to take his life. No wonder he was afraid. He had been obedient to his master, but suddenly he was helpless and running for his life. He ran into the desert and sought refuge in a cave. He called out to his master and said that he wanted to die, that he’d had enough and that his work had come to nought.

God cared deeply for Elijah and spoke to him. He said to go out to the entrance of the cave and the glory of the Lord would pass by. And it did. Whilst there were magnificent displays of God’s glory through great and powerful wind, an earthquake and fire, God did not speak to Elijah through these powerful forces. It was the gentle whisper – the still, small voice.

God’s glory is magnificent to behold and we see it everywhere in creation from the planets and stars to the tiny plant life and humanity. God’s glory is evident.

But sometimes we need to listen closely for God’s glory, for the gentle whisper where He reveals Himself.

A hymn that I sang as a chorister many years ago still stays with me. It’s called Dear Lord and Father of Mankind. In the final verse we ask God to help us put aside our earthly desires and priorities so that we can hear His ‘still, small voice of calm’.

Are we listening for the glory of God to speak to us?
