Day 4: Do I Bear the Marks of a Marketplace Missionary?

A few years ago, I went to a self-serve frozen dessert shop where you fill your own cup and pay by weight. As I placed my cup on the scale to check out, the attendant kindly asked me to remove the spoon I had already placed inside. He said, “It’s not fair for you to pay for the weight of the spoon.”

I was impressed by his honesty. Later, I returned with friends and repeated the test—each time, the employee did the same. I later found out he was a Christian when I saw him involved in a church-led social project.

The spoon doesn’t weigh much, but if we can’t apply justice in the small things, how will we do so in greater matters?

In just three verses, John the Baptist gives us a model of behavior at work:

  • Be attentive to others’ needs and act with generosity (Luke 3:11).
  • Do what is right (Luke 3:13).
  • Act with respect and contentment (Luke 3:14).

If your coworkers were asked about you, would they say you live by these principles?

Many Christians live as “secret agents” in the workplace. But the Bible says we were saved to do good works—to be witnesses of the Kingdom.

If someone who’s worked with you for years suddenly finds out you’re a Christian and says, “I had no idea!”, how would you feel?

Today, it’s becoming harder to be a Christian at work—but challenges shouldn’t make us forget our mission. Instead, they should lead us to depend more on God and act with courage, faithfulness, and wisdom.

Let’s pray together:

“Jesus, source of forgiveness and mercy, I depend on Your grace every day. I repent for all the times I failed to show signs that I am Your disciple at work. But Your grace gives me a new chance. Help me reflect Your love, justice, and holiness. Give me specific names of coworkers to pray for, and opportunities to share my faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
