How can we display the attribute of Mercy?
Manifesting the mercy of God is an important trait that is often overlooked. Believers are called to reflect God’s mercy in their lives, especially in the face of persecution and suffering (which includes misrepresentation of those who are in Christ Jesus). Paul, the veteran of suffering, teaches that through enduring trials, Christians experience God’s comfort, which equips them to extend mercy and consolation to others (2 Corinthians 1:3–5). A compassionate and loving Father knows our trials and tribulations and personally consoles us when we turn to Him; then we can employ the same merciful kindness to our brothers and sisters in Christ as well as those outside the fold.
Acts of mercy should be motivated by genuine compassion rather than a desire for recognition. Jesus, in the Sermon on the Mount, emphasized humility in charitable deeds, encouraging believers to act for God’s glory rather than human applause (Matthew 6:1–4). Acts of compassion should take place before the solo audience of a gracious God who records the altruistic work in His heavenly ledger that assures a lasting generous compensation!
Because the Lord in His magnificent mercy does not give us what we deserve, we need to exhibit a heart full of pity toward the unsaved. Jude 22–23 urges us to have compassion on the lost, discern how to share the gospel effectively, “pulling them out of the fire.” Christians are rescue workers. Jude’s word choice “pulling” means to seize, or to snatch. Just as God’s mercy pulled us out of the fire, we must extend that mercy to others.
Employment Point: Manifest the mercy of God.
