How can we become Holy?
The Hebrew term for “holiness” means the realm of the sacred being distinct from the common. God’s moral holiness can be described as follows: God is perfect in holiness and separate from sin, so He abhors sins and demands purity in His moral creatures. As such, He commands His people to pursue holiness: “Be holy, for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16). This command helps us to understand God’s eternal nature that is worthy of emulation.
Hebrews 12:14 tells us to continuously pursue peace and holiness. In essence, we are to vigorously go after holiness. This pursuit involves separating from sinful behaviors and cultivating righteousness (1 Peter 1:13–16, Romans 6:19–22). The ultimate reward for this pursuit is eternal communion with God, as those who are pure in heart will “see God” (Matthew 5:8). As a believer, we are positionally holy since we are seated with Christ in heavenly places (Ephesians 1:3, 2:6). However, we must pursue holiness daily and ultimately will see its completion.
Paul connects the timeless attributes of God with His calling for us. He writes, “just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love” (Ephesians 1:4). Not only do we have a high calling, but also an eternal one!
Holiness is a process; however, it cannot be stopped in the child of God, and the outcome will be the completion of being fully conformed to the image of Jesus Christ (Romans 8:29; 1 John 2:28–3:3).
Employment Point: Imitate God who is morally holy.
