Living Out The Psalms: Jon Foreman Of SWITCHFOOT

DAY 2 OF 5

LISTEN TO THE SONG AROUND YOU [The video portion of this devotional is not available on your device. To view this video, visit your plan at www.Bible.com] I love this Psalm because it has two of my favorite things in it: water and music. “Deep calls out to deep.” The Psalmist talks about the roar of the ocean, the roar of the waterfall, and this deep calling within you. I’ve heard God being referred to as that great homesickness that we long for. There’s a deep longing within you that’s calling out. It's longing for justice, for truth, for meaning, for home. This deep longing is calling to you, like a waterfall, or an ocean, or a song. Are you attentive to this deep song calling out to you? Do you hear it? Are you listening? Listening well is a sign of a great musician. Because a great musician is attentive to what’s going on around him. What does the song need? What do my friends need? My family? My community? My favorite musicians on the planet are the ones who play exactly what is needed, nothing more, and nothing less. Listen to BB King. He could say more with three notes than most guitar players (myself included!) could say in a million notes. That takes an amazing amount of listening attention: to be able to understand what’s happening around you, and dive in on just the right level. It takes humility. It takes restraint. And above all, it takes wonder. When you begin to embrace life through the eyes of wonder, you begin to see things that you’ve never seen before. My daughter will point out little ants, and insects, and cracks in the pavement that suddenly have this meaning and this purpose. Without the eyes of wonder, nothing can be wonderful. But against the backdrop of wonder, I’m reminded of the larger symphony going on around me. Reminded how small I really am. "Deep calls out to deep. In the roar of your waterfalls, all your breakers have swept over me."  Are you listening? Are you listening to that deep song? Can you hear the roar of the waterfalls, the roar of the ocean? Can you hear Him directing his love to you? And at night, can you hear his song? It’s there. For moredaily resources visit SWITCHFOOT.com )
