Beneït sigui el Déu i Pare de nostre Senyor Jesucrist, que ens ha beneït en Crist amb tota mena de benediccions espirituals dalt al cel. Ens escollí en ell abans de crear el món, perquè fóssim sants, irreprensibles als seus ulls. Per amor ens destinà a ser fills seus per Jesucrist, segons la seva benèvola decisió, a lloança i glòria de la gràcia que ens ha concedit en el seu Estimat. – En ell, per la seva sang, hem obtingut la redempció, el perdó dels nostres pecats. La riquesa de la gràcia de Déu s’ha desbordat en nosaltres. Ell ens ha omplert de tota saviesa i intel·ligència. Ens ha fet conèixer el misteri del seu designi, la decisió benèvola que havia pres per executar-la en la plenitud dels temps: recapitular en el Crist totes les coses, tant les del cel com les de la terra. En Crist hem rebut la nostra part en l’herència; ens hi havia destinat el designi d’aquell qui tot ho duu a terme d’acord amb la decisió de la seva voluntat. Volia que fóssim lloança de la seva glòria, nosaltres que des del principi tenim posada en Crist la nostra esperança. En ell, vosaltres vau escoltar la paraula de la veritat, l’evangeli que us salva. En ell heu cregut i heu estat marcats amb el segell de l’Esperit Sant promès. I l’Esperit és la penyora de l’heretat que Déu ens té reservada, quan ens redimirà com a possessió seva, a lloança de la seva glòria.
